Show HUNTING, Wednesday, September 26, 1990 Chukar program restores numbers : Chukars were first brought Into Utah In 1957 and Ray Olsen, the Division of Wildlife Resources game bird manager in Springville started working with them soon BY REX C. INF ANGER Herald Correspondent Chukars are one of the fastest ', most challenging and enjoyable game birds to shoot at. J after they armed. .- - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah. Groups from as far north as Logan, as far east as Vernal and as far south as Escalante particid project. pated in the TJus year, the DWR hatched over chukar chicks. Ten thousand of those birds were given out o various groups such as the Wildlife adopt-a-bir- The other four thousand birds were reared by the DWR at the game farm. This year was a much better year for natural chukar hatches than last year. The flocks from Vernal to Simpson Springs all seem to have increased in size. Olsen and his crew have put four new guzzlers out by Wendover in hopes that this will increase the flock size out there since chukars are often found by guzzlers. rainwaGuzzlers are man-mad- e ter catch basins that store and dole out precious water on arid lands. Guzzlers have been put up in many parts of the state and help the wildlife in those areas to expand their range. Guzzlers are simple devices, but they can be ruined by carelessness. Stray bullets will pierce the roof. This reduces the water collecting ability. Cattle, sheep and man can break the float causing all the water to run out at once. Wind, fire and silt can destroy the guzzlers which, in turn, reduces the available game. Guzzlers are maintained by DWR personnel. Vandalism of guzzlers should be reported on the poaching hotline: - J '11. y"l MW ft IB ( i i . - A. . ..-- ...- Herald Photo David Dahl Ray Olsen displays some of the chukar chicks, he raises. 1- Herald PhotoDavid Dahl s Si Hundreds of chukars are grown at the Springville Bird Farm. Deer herd management key to hunting BY REX C. INFANGER Herald Correspondent Controlling deer herd numbers in Utah is important and one of the ways is control permits, both preseason and post season. . The first time I told someone that I shot a doe, you would have thought by the look on his face that I had just shot his cat. He couldn't believe it because you just don't Bhoot does in this state. ; I was in a sporting goods store one time and heard a couple of guys say that they applied for a ;doe tag every year and then threw them away just to keep others from using those tags. This kind of attitude hurts our deer population. ine population ot our aeer nera is always changing, so it is impossible to get an exact count of how many deer we have in the state. We can, however, determine approximately how large the herd is and whether or not it is growing or shrinking. The type of terrain that a herd is in helps establish the carrying capacity of the area and that is why Utah has so many herd units. Each of these herd units is managed so .the optimum number of animals "can be left in the unit depending on the winter carry capacity, because that is when there is the least amount of feed. Herds that are too large for the area try to overgraze the available feed. This lack of forage decreases the carrying capacity in the summer and then even less deer can be raised. This means that we ! ! must harvest enough excess does, above the bucks harvested, to match the winter capacity of the range. It is exactly the same thing that ranchers do when they have more animals than they can feed. Doe hunting helps keep the herd and unit in balance. A second thing proper doe hunting accomplishes is stimulate greater reproduction from the remaining does. Proper doe hunting in Nevada and Wyoming has been found to be no greater than 15 percent doe harvest. Does that remain after the hunt have a higher birth rate and many of the breed a year earlier. Deer that are in an overcrowded range tend to breed at two and a half years old or older while well Let Us Satiate Your HUNTER'S APPETIT Sail msmmmmmmm I ! In the past there have been years when the does have been over-harvest- and we have had poor success in hunting. This was especially true in 1972 when we had a huge doe harvest and three years later in 1975 our poorest overall harvest ever. We are now going the other way. Utah has too many does and not enough people harvesting them. When we have another bad winter, we may lose much of our forage and this will cause a reduction in deer herds that we may never recover from because so much of our winter habitat is being lost to urban development.
