The idea was to allow smaller deer to grow to respectable size before being hunted but it never had the chance. The only solution for the program was to discontinue the hunts. There were 10 antler restriction units in the state where wildlife officials hoped more mature bucks would develop. bucks "Because of the being illegally killed, these programs were not acceptable," says Shields. Other programs that are more successful in providing hunter success and higher quality hunting are the limited entry units and the high country buck areas. Limited entry and high country buck area require a $22 fee, and applicants must be selected in a state wide draw. Limited entry hunters have a one in five chance of being selected. High country buck applicants have a one in six chance of being drawn. These units fulfill the needs of hunters who want bigger bucks and less hunter pressure. Drought conditions for the past two years have reduced deer populations in some areas. This has resulted in the Board of Big Game reducing the number of antlerless control permits issued. Last year there were 29,100 antlerless control The 6 was invented about by A.O. Niedner. The original cartridge was a wildcat named the 25 Niedner. "Too many hunters only get excited about deer hunting two days before the hunt and they forget it two days after the hunt. Some day they may not have some of their hunting privileges preserved for the future," says Jense. One of the biggest changes in this year's hunting programs is the There are no more three-poior better areas in the state. That program had a good concept, except for one flaw: too many Utah hunters don't obey the law. Wildlife officials found an excessive amount of killing of deer with fewer than three points in the areas. The program never had a chance. In fact, some conservation officers reported as many as one ch 1920 The future of big game has been elimination weight bullets like the 87 grain Spitzer can be loaded to shoot up to 3600 feet per second which gives it an effective kill zone of 300 yards on varmints. The 254)6 is not really built for taking animals larger than sheep or deer. The bullets are traveling so fast at close range that they tend to break up rather than penetrate if they hit a large bone. At long distances, the bullets lack the necessary mass to penetrate, especially an animal as large as a moose or an elk. I know that moose and elk have been taken with the but taking game of that size with this weapon must be done under ideal conditions, and must of the time, hunting conditions are less than ideal. 25-0- al The lighter game weapon. 30-0- nt management practices handled. of m 30-0- two-poi- nt sub-leg- 25-0- Herald Correspondent In 1906, the .30 caliber military cartridge was developed. 6 and It was called the has become one of the most versatile rounds ever developed. The general season from Oct. 20 to Oct. 30 will be affected by the drought conditions in most parts of the state. Wildlife officials say that means two things: first there are fewer deer, and second deer will be close to water sources. Drought conditions cause serious problems to young fawns in the weaning and early growth stages. Last year and this year there was great fawn mortality, resulting in fewer yearling and two and one half year old bucks to hunt. These are typically the largest number of deer shot during the general season, according to Big Game Coordinator Wes Shields. "Deer have been low, near the agricultural areas where there is water, or high up near water sources," Shields says. "The deer will be taking advantage of any moisture and stay nearby." Wildlife officials are estimating 180,000 hunters will try for mule deer in Utah this year during the annual hunt. This is by far the largest hunt in Utah. For many hunters this is a family tradition. To some hunters the most important forecast is the weather for opening morning, not how many deer there are. They simply want to get out and enjoy family, friends and some hunting. Since three quarters of the hunters in the field won't get a shot, or perhaps even a glimpse of a buck, it's a good thing they go for more than one reason. The Board of Big Game is considering recommendations from the public and from the Division of Wildlife Resources concerning limmting the numbers of hunters for the general deer season. This recommendation has two main goals. First to reduce crowding. The recommendation is for 150,000 hunters. Second, fewer hunters would give young bucks a chance to escape and mature, providing a higher quality hunt in the future. Several public hearings have been held concerning this matter and Grant Jense, Assistant Chief of Big game, says public response has been low. "The bridge and road will really improve access to the park, especially during the month of August, when it was almost impossible to get people out here." said Kay Mar Willis, park ranger at Kodachrome Basin State Park. The head of the Paria River passes near the area the new 100 ft. bridge now spans, he said. This area would often become flooded, shutting off access to the park. The dirt road leading into the park also discouraged some people from visiting the park, he said. Having a bridge and a freshly paved road will alleviate both of these problems and should increase visitation at the park. Willis expects mere visitors to Bryce Canyon National Park will now include a visit to Kodachrome Basin as part of their trip. The new bridtie and road will also allow better access to some popular Bureau of Land Management areas located south of the park.
