They play a lot harder and a lot better," said Roach over the phone. Then, as Utah coach Ron McBride almost choked on his food as he laughed, Roach went on and on about how good the Utes were, finishing with: "They have two inside linebackers who are something else nobody gets past them. They really know the game and have to be as good as anyone.. .And their offense, well, it's more conservative than it was before, but it compliments the defense better now because it's not turning the ball over in bad field position. Roach added a victory last Force "played better than we that his defense in week against Air Air Force's option have in years and years." it was McBride's turn to respond, he returned the favor by calling Wyoming "the best team we have played this year, a team that plays very well on both sides of the ball. They can play with anyone." McBride said he was pleased with two aspects of his football defense and team at this point special teams. The offense, which has generated only two touchdowns in the last two games, is his concern now. "We are good in two phases we are playing good defense and our special teams are playing very well. The phase we need" to work on is the offense. We have good athletes, we just need to get more consistent, improve our scheme. So that's the phase we're working on right now," he said. When Grove, Provo, Am. Fork take narrow volleyball wins PL By CARL WALTERS Herald Correspondent The home court was not much help in the first night of action in Region 4 prep volleyball. The opening night of league play resulted in three very tight three-gam- e matches with the visitors coming out victorious in all three. At Mountain View, newcomer Charlene Johnson, last year's MVP at the National Junior Olympics led the volleyball tournament, Pleasant Grove Vikings to a nar2 row victory over the homestanding Bruins. In the Bruin-Vikin- g matchup, Johnson, a setter, led Pleasant Grove with five service aces, nine kills and eight solo blocks. Chris Johnson added three aces and eight kills to help the Vikings to the narrow victory. Across town in the Orem High gym, Benally had 20 kills to lead the Bulldogs to the win. Thursday, it will be Orem at Pleasant Grove, Mountain View at American Fork and Timpview at Provo. Fork Cavewomen 3, 16-1- 5, Cougar spikers edge ISU By DOROTHY KNOELL Herald Sports Writer It wasn't pretty, but the BYU Cougars got what they wanted Tuesday night: a victory. The Cougars eased past 7 Idaho 1 to imState 15-prove their record to 2 on the year. This weekend, BYU is on the road at the Nebraska Invitational, 'Hus-kewhich features the and Wisconsin, another team that has appeared in the Top 20 12th-rank- 9-- 4, 5, 17-1- 5, 15-1- 9-- rs top-rank- polls. Last week, BYU lost a close, e match to No. 5 Texas. "Sometimes it's hard with a game like this sandwiched in between games against teams," said BYU coach Elaine Michaelis. "The players have to learn that they have to play hard every match. "Plus, we also had some kids who just weren't on their games tonight. I guess everyone has a right to be a little off once in a while, and we had several who were." The Cougars breezed through the first game, jumping to a 0 lead behind the hitting of Tea Nieminen. Aces trom Tumua Matu'u, Carla Gee and Marinda Gorbahn aided the cause and BYU won easily. "When you get a game so easily, five-gam- top-rank- the problem is you tend to let down a bit. And we did," Michaelis said. "Idaho State is a good team they may not have much depth, but they have six people who can play. And they did a nice job." BYU took a 4 lead in game two, but Kristy Chatterley, Susie Ketchum and Kristi Parrish led a Bengal comeback to tie the game at From there, ISU scored seven straight points, four off Cougar errors, to win the game. In game three, the Cougars again and 13-- But got the lead at the Bengals came back and had a game point at Becky Molen got BYU over that hurdle with a kill, then Marinda Gorbahn Ashman added another kill to tie the game.
