' Whatever is the matter now?" asked Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy, the muskrat Indy housekeeper. "Please go see what is the matter. W'lggy!" sho begged. 'My hands are all flour, for I've been making some cake! I do hope the chimney isn't on fire!" "Oil, I dbh't imagine it's anything like that!" laughed L'ncle Wigglly as ho arose from his easy chair to go and find out about the shouting The noise kept up. "Oh. Uncle Wigglly! Come on out! Coms on out!" "I'm suro It's a fire!!' cried Nurso Jane. "Oh. dear!" Bu'. Ls mti.s not a fire the chimney wasn't een smoking, though It 10 On would when Nurse Jan put more wood In the sto e to bake tho cake. Vnclc Wiggiiy saw Jackie and Psetle Bow Wow. the two puppy dog hoys, and some other animals near (he front steps in the snow. "Come on out l'ncle Wigglly! Come on out"' cried the animal boys, waving their Bhovels In the air. What's going on?" asked tho bunny gentleman. "Are you going to have a snowball fight, or do you want to 'play more tricks on me by making believe be-lieve a big icicle is my rheumatism crutch '."' "Oh. nothing like thaf" squealed Curly Twlstytail) the plggu boy. "We want you to help us build a snow-house." snow-house." i 'That's It." barked, squealed and laughed the otjicr animal boys. "We're going to make a snow house and have some fun "in d. Come on. L'ncle Wig-f:i!v' Wig-f:i!v' Hurry for the snow house"' "Hush! Not so much noise. If you please'" said the bunny gentleman, holding up one paw- "Nurso Jane will think two chimineyi are on fire. Wait until I go, my hat and see If my pink nose Is on straight, and I'll come with you," , Nurse Jane felt better when told that there was no fire, though she said Uncle Wigglly was funny to go out I'uildlng snow houses ut his" uge. But the bunny liked It. Soon he had his shovel and he was helping i'.Iih plgglc boys, the squirrel boys, the doggie chaps and Sammlo Littlstall, the rabbit, make a snow-house. snow-house. Hlg hallfl of snow were rolled unlil they were larger than wash tubs. Then they were plied together and the boys began digging out of the center of them a hollow place to make the Inside In-side of the house. "But how do we make the roof?" a3ked Jackie Bow Wow. "Every time wo try to dig the enow away over head It always falls down on ue. How-can How-can wo make a roof for the snow house, l'ncle Wiggiiy?" "I'll show you," answered the bunny He took some bean poles, laid them across on top of the walls of the snow hoUSs and on the pole he told the animal ani-mal boys to pile branches of green Christmas trees that grew In the wood Soon there was a green roof over tho snow house. "Now pile snow on the green tree branches, cover thoni all up. and we'll haw. a snow roof on our snow house," Bald l'ncle Wigglly. "Hurray!" cried the animal boys. Soon the green branches were covered with snow, and tho roof of the play house was white like ''.ho walls Then L'ncle Wigglly and the boya went inside. in-side. ' Oh. but this will never do," said the bunny, as he looked about him. "You have only a front door to th house. Wo must have a back door as well. Then, in case any bad animals come, wo can run out of the back door whllo they are trying to come in the rrom ' Wo never thought of that." barked bark-ed Peetle Bow Wow. With the help of Uncle Wiggiiy a back door was dug In the snow house, and then they made a sort of tunnel under tho snow to a big drift behind the snow house This drift was hollowed hol-lowed out like the round InV, or igloo, of tho (Eskimo. "Now wo have two snow b a big one and a little one," said Uncls; Wigglly. "And if anything happens we can run out of th big house, along, tho tunnel and hide In the little snow house." And it's a good thing l'ncle Wiggiiy had the animal boys make this second snow house. For all at once, while Che bunny gentleman and his friends were sitting in the big house, eating some cookies Nurse Jane brought them, all at once the Bad Bob Cat jumped down out of a tree over the big snow house I ow n through the thin roof burst the Bob Cait, how ling- "I want ears to nibble! I want cars!" "Quick, boys!" cried Uncle Wigglly, as tho Bob Cat burst through the poles and branches of tho snow roof Run out the back door, through the tunnel and into the little snow hut.j There We'll be safe!" Out thay ran, leaving tho Bob Catj snarling and growling, all tangled up in the. poles and evergreen tree branches. And tho Bad Chap was so mixed up that before he could get free; and run through the tunnel two policeman police-man dogs came in, arrested him and look him off to Jail. So tho Bob Tat didn't nibble any ears at all. And it's a good ' hlng the bunny gentleman helped build the snow house :pr some of the animal hoys might have heen nipped. However, everything came out all right, and if the chocolate choco-late caramel doesn't try to beat the rug with tho stick of candy and make he lollypop laugh, I'll tell you ner.t about Uncle Wiggiiy and Tommies I tail. oo |
