H On New Year's day Chicago's lead- I ing bankers were so perplexed and I worried they devoted their entire time I to preventing a financial disaster To I do 80. It was necessary to organize I Ct powerful bank of the city into 1 !- an institute having more assets than any bank outside New York City. Half billion dollars were placed back of the combined interests anil then three large, banks with Impaired capital were placed under the protec tlon of the new organization. Had this quick action been deferred, Chicago would have been facing a failure fail-ure covering J85. 000,000 liabilities, or only a few million short of the Baring Brothers disastrous failure which thir ty years ago rocked the foundations of the financial world. These disturbances which are occurring oc-curring in certain banking circles are the result of the readjustments upon the commercial communities of the country. The successful manner In which they have been met Is reassur ing to the business Interests of the country With all our upset, the finan clal strength of the nation has been equal to the strain. |
