Show THE ZEPHYR MAY 1990 Zaphyn Warm weather Is here, so wa don't hear lot about limits on wood stoves. But should we do something about them? Tom: Wa should have an ordnance In place already. I have a wood stove. We PACE 13 i would have an ordinance as a way to eliminate some of the problem. The smoke from stoves Is creating a terrible problem. The Council has brought It up a number of times. Its time we had public hearings and got on with It desert hardbodies classes: 5:30 to 6:30 PM M-T-Th-- Zephyr: There has been some controversy about the countv hospital. You are on board... the Tom: I now have a focus report, given to us at the board meeting this week. I haven't had the opportunity to go through the whole report We asked LHS Lutheran Hospital Services, the management firm brought In during the winter to manage the hospital after the board asked for and received the resignation of the former hospital administrator to review our entire operation. We don't want to lose the hospital. But I don't think we need to continue subsidizing the hospital so much. The board Is no there to run the hospital, thats what administrators are for. The hospital administrator Is In charge, and the staff answers to the administrator, not the board. If the supervisors and staff are working as a team, then were going to win. But If they are trying to go off on their own, and go around the supervisor, they should be terminated. There are some awfully good people working In our hospital. And there are a few who shouldnt even be there. A very few. They know who they are. You will always find slackards, any place you ever are. Or those who have a personality conflict with their supervisors. They may be both good people but If they are going In two directions, you either change the supervisor or the employees should go down the road and find another place to work. Zephyr: You own some rental units In town. You rented an apartment to house the temporary hospital administrator at a rate of $800 per month. As a member of the hospital board was that ethical? Tom: Yes, It was totally ethical under the circumstances. People In town with rental space available have turned them Into overnight rentals, Including my wife. I didnt get Involved with the actual rental to the hospital, but I do own It with my wife. I cut the price to under $30 a night The current hospital administrator heard the stories and said she didnt want to get Involved, or that's what I heard she said. But the hospital couldn't find a rental place that didnt want her out every weekend. We could rent that apartment for 40, 50 percent more. If the hospital doeent want It, they can move out tomorrow and wed be happy. My wife has already had four calls this week to rent It again. Zephyr: Once again, where does the golf course development stand? Tom: The problem Is, whos willing to put up any money to build a house In Moab? Or anywhere else In Utah, as far as that's concerned. First Security Bank? No. Williamsburg? No. First Western? If you are a local, and they know you and you have good credit, yea. But for some promoter to come In here, no. So the problem with the development of the golf course la the time, the era. When the financing becomes available, you can sell condos and homes In Moab. Until that occurs, I don't see anyone coming In here to develop It The development of the golf course will come when the financing Is available. Zephyr: You have been Mayor for more than 8 years. Do you still enlov It? Tom: I think I work hard, and Im proud of what Ive done. Maybe Im not as dazzled by the job as I once was. But I get Just as much or more satisfaction now as I ever Fr at the FITNESS CENTER (at the old skating rink, behind the bowling alley) AEROBICS CLASS f mil instructors Marabel Loveridge Teri Tibbetts Andrea Stoughton 259-798- 7 tom till marcy clokey - till photography an eye on a better world with got CANYON LAN rtf P.O.
