Show THE ZEPHYR MAY 1990 Its higher. Zephyr: How much higher? Feme: Very much, It's doubled. Merv: Its quite considerable. What Is required for each particular case Is more Involved now than It used to be. Things are getting more tricky now. The whole legal y. In addition to that the load by the J.P. has Increased considerably. system Is as of a year ago. I checked the actual number of cases filed In Circuit But Zephyr: and District Court, the number had DECLINED bv almost 15 from 1986. Merv: Maybe numbers, but the time taken In each one Is Increased. Its a function of two things: the complication and the number of cases. But ultimately, Its up to the people. We did not appoint or elect the county attorney. We had to accept responsibility for saying, do we hire help for the county attorney? PAGE 5 Merv: CRYSTAL FOUNTAIN WEST minerals & fossils, jewelry & fine gifts We mjne our own sue-craz- We also carry New Age books, tapes and other gift items The PlazaMoab Public Radio Zephyr: Do you support the proposed downtown plaza and Moab Public Radio, and Is the Commission willing to lend financial support to these projects? Merv: At the moment, the county can only contribute to the Plaza with verbal support It cant do It financially. We dont have the money. Feme: Were not budgeted for It Merv: Were already seeing that our collections are down below the estimate, so we may not Im hoping the governor will call a special session of the legislature and will have the extra 1 transient room tax put on the floor. It would not be used for advertising. It would go for bricks and mortar -- - things like that But If we had the $35,000 to give, we would willingly go In with the City on this. Dave Blerschled, In The Zephyr Interview last month, Indicated that the city and county were not working well together. I disagree with that I think we work together much better than In previous years. But I agree with him that we will contribute. That you cant divorce the city from the county. And If we get that 1, Is my view. radio. Zephyr: What about Moab Public Radio? Merv: We need radio. Whether It's public radio or the one we had. I will support Gary and Elizabeth Fleck 550 No. Main (next to La Hacienda) Zephyr: But you dont see the concept of public radio being different from AM? Couldnt It be a great opportunity for government to keep In touch with the people? Better really than a weekly or monthly newspaper. And at some point will the countv be willing to support It financially? Merv: dont know about the budget If youre asking me, If we had the money, would we, I think we would. Feme: I think so too. I think the people, however, have to understand that If they want the county to support all these things, theyre going to have to pay for It Its their money. Everybody wants something, but If you say tax Increase, It's a no. Zephyr: But there are a lot who would agree. If money Is so tight how could we contribute $1500 to the Learning Report? Merv: I think Its a very small percentage compared to what we stand to lose or gain by Congress designated wilderness. We wanted to know how much It can affect the county. Zephyr: So you think the learning Report can have a tremendous effect In stopping wilderness designation? Feme: I think It can. Merv: Yes. . Trough Springs Road 259-517- 7 I Zephyr: In an Interview with David Knutson last month, he expressed new reservations about the proposed Trough Springs Road and stated that he would only support maintaining the road In Its current condition. What are vour feelings about that project now? Feme: Yes, I still support It I know that road Is going to have to be Improved. That Is one of the reasons that I objected to the Vernal road. I thought, why not spend that money on other things closer to town. I think this road would give us a nice little loop. Zephyr: Do vou know what the cost Is? Feme: Heavens no. I don't remember those numbers. I dont even remember my telephone number. Merv: I read what Dave said, and what went through my mind Is, the Trough Springs Road Is not In yet Zephyr: But I believe David was talking about the entire protect - paving Kane Creek and linking the Hatch Point road through a new road at Trough Springs. Merv: I dont know that the BLM has come to Dave or the Commission and shown us the big overall plan. I have seen It Trough Springs was a very small part of all that I cant say what Dave was speaking to. He did not speak to me. I dont really know what he said; I know what words he passed on. Is the road too narrow along the egg ranch road and Trough Springs? Is It too narrow on 128, south of Moab? What Is the question? Zephyr: The BLM wants to construct a paved road from Kane Creek and up Trough Springs to connect with Hatch Point Do vou support that prolect? Merv: I support It... the concept But Its a BLM project It certainly will have some spinoff on us. I understand Fran Barnes Is probably the key man In developing this whole project for the BLM. But the project actually calls for Improving roads all the way to the road to Newspaper Rock. Its a much bigger project than going Just to Hatch Point Feme: It's a long way off, years off. I understand that they couldn't get funding for next year. Zephyr: They cant even get funding for toilets. Feme: I know. These are long-ter- m plans. But the concept Is wonderful. open 7 days a week: 9AM-2P- & M 4PM-9P- M 1 WATERING DOESNT HAVE TO BE A DRAG Simplify your irrigation system with drippers & mini-sprinkle- rs CALL KEN, and let him design your Irrigation system.
