While City Is Outwardly Quiet, Strong Guards Have Been Placed in Business Busi-ness Places to Prevent Further Destruction. Butte, Mont. Merchants of Butte have placed armed guards in their stores to guard against unforeseen contingencies. One of the larger stores has watchmen patrolling the sidewalks. Ever since the riots of two weeks ago, caused by factional fights in the local union of the Western Federation Federa-tion of Miners, Butte has labored under a tense situation. The city outwardly is quiet, as it has been since the last riot of Tuesday Tues-day night, when 250 pounds of dynamite dyna-mite were placed -in twenty charges in the business center. The new independent in-dependent union of miners, which was formed in opposition to the Western Federation of Miners control, con-trol, reported it had signed up 2,289 members out of the 9,000 metal miners min-ers here. |
