Show 7 UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. June 25. 2002- - Pane SURVEY retail purchases were not considered in Wikstroms analysis which only Continued from page focused on Duchesne County. 1 The analyaia suggested that there were strong opportunities available in sales of hobbies, toys, games, radio , TV, electronics, miscellaneous amusement, eewing; and needlework. It alao found that opportunities were good for sales of miscellaneous general merchandise, stationary supplies, photographic equipment, computers, and software. According to Becker, photographic studios and repair shops specialising in and miscellaneous repairs also looked like good opportunities for merchants to consider when expanding a business or opening up new ores. In order to dbi. "mine retail sales opportunities, Becker simply calculated how much money left the area a term referred to as leakage, in more than a hundred categories. If sales were low for a retail segment she assumed that shoppers were still spending the predicted amount of cash on the products, but that they were spending it elsewhere. She then looked at the results in light of the survey. For example, the figures showed diners are eating out of the county, butthe survey indicated they wanted restaurants dose to home. Therefore, Becker concluded there was a strong opportunity for more local eating establishments. According to Oliver, it is not a false assumption to assume that people with limited incomes spend the same ratio of that income eating out as their more affluent counterparts. People actually that amount eating out. People busy schedules now days and dine out more often. Leakage figures were alao not adr justed to account for possible price differences between goods and services in Roosevelt and those in Salt Lake. For example, if hair cuts are only half as much here as in Salt Lake County clients would spend less than expected in the Basin, or if groceries are more costly here shoppers would spend more money than expected buying groceries locally. Survey Results The survey found that 71 percent of the respondents want to more stores that sell dothingin Roosevelt, 47 percent want shoe stores, 11 percent of those who responded to the survey wanted more housewares and home improvements, ten percent said they would buy variety and gifts if they were available in Roosevelt, and only four percent said the town needs more grocery stores. ( This was a fill in the blank question so respondents may have had more than one answer, which may account for the fact that the total percentage is greater than 100.) Seventy-fivpercent of those surveyed said they shop in Vernal for items, but 82 percent said they bought their groceries in Roosevelt. Topping the list of reasons for shopping in Vernal for goods was the large selection of merchandise available. Twenty-eigpercent felt they got a good value, four percent shopped out iff loyalty, and three percent took advantage of Vernals extended shopping hours. Forty percent of the survey respondents cited more shopping as the single most important change that could be made to improve the downtown area. Sixteen percent would like to see more quality businesses. Thirty-fou- r percent would like to change the towns appearance. Respondents rated the towns shopping strengths as follows: businesses themselves came in first at 33 percent; acceasability and community feeling, both 16 percent; and attractive appearance, 12 percent. When ratingslapping weaknesses the selection of goods topped the list at 61 percent, appearance and park-- . ing garnered ten percent, prices eight percent and store hours five percent. Eightyperoentof respondents said the distance and time to Vernal was a definite disadvantage when shopping in Uintah County. Becker was surprised at the community spirit reflected in 14 percent of the re e non-groce- non-groce- ry ht lit as the greatest disadvantage to shopping in Vernal. Others cited cost and crowds. State figures estimate Utah's per capita income at 318,185 and estimates that the average person spends $8,344 of that income making retail purchases. It also straws data indicating what proportion ofthat $8,344 ia spent on various items, such as clothes, shoes, hardware, etc. Figures show that the average per capita income in Rooeevelt is roily $11,945 or a third less than the state average. Because of the large discrepancy between the citys and the states per capita incomes, Becker adjusted her figures proportionally to determine average overall spending and average spending per item. Instead of making $8,344 in retail purchase like the average Utahan, Becker calculated that residents of Duchesne county make $5,507 in retail purchases annually. Becker calculated that if every person in Roosevelt spent all oftheir estimated $5,507 in town, Roosevelt's nnnal retail sales totals would be $23.9 million, and if all county residents spent $5,507 in the county the county would bring in approximately $80 million. Roosevelt's records tor 2001 show that its businesses actually exceeded this amount. Roosevelt businesses made over half of the total county retail sales, $46,400,000. Total sales for the county came in at only issues from local IVfff. Oliver vowed to Ip with the implementation, 111 come back out and help set up a process for setting priorities. Roosevelt City partnered with Utah Main Street, a state organization dedicated to farthering economic development, which contracted Wikstrom. Utah Main Street assumed the costs associated with the market analysis. This is one of the benefits of partnering, declared City Council Woman Beverly Hansen.
