When we first attended back in the early sixties the festival had a three week run with three alternating plays. We sat on folding chairs on a patio at the SUU campus; the actors were local townspeople and college students. The main actors were usually pretty good and we took our chances with some of t lie others. How different the performances are now. We always make it a point to read the plays before attending even if we have seen and read them before. This year we are readings ploy that is new to us and haa only been performed one other time In the 40 year history of the festival. The play, "Cymbcline," is almost three stories in one with familiar elements from fairy tale, romance, visitations from the Coda, mistaken identity andjoyoua family reunion. On one level there is the story of a king's daughter who haa married her true love only to lose him to banishment so that she can instead be married to the on ofthe kings present wife, a wicked stepmother straight out of Snow White. The daughter escapes that fate .and in the process assumes the role of a loyal servant disguised as a young bqy. The king also had two infant sons who disappeared some 20 years earlier and have been raised in the rustic forests of Wales . Fortunately one of the sons haa a distinguishing birthmark that will figure importantly in the resolution of the plays various elements at the end. Another thread ofthe store has the tanMiwl husband ofthe King s daughter making a wager about his wife's unquestfoningconslamy a wager that will bring him to much grief later in the pipy. All the action is played out againat the background ofan impendRome. ing war between England and When things get mixed up to the extent that it seems impossible for them ever to be straightened out, the god Jupiter descends on the back of an eagle and sets things right. We always look forward to the staga ing of these plays. They have come The those days. from early long way tagtogand coetumes are spectacular; the actors are all professional so that the action never lags. Hes hoping theyll catch on as pets, and so far i nquiries have come in from as far as Europe, Mexico and Argentina. "I like them, said Pillard, 30. If nobody else does, that doesn't really bother me. We're broedingjust for the novelty end of it. n animal is The smallest old bull thats 33 inches a three-yea- r tall and weighs 320 pounds. The largest, a mature bull, is 35 inches tall and 400 pounds. Pillard thinks interest for the cattle, which start at about $1,000, is growing. And the more people know, the more interest he sees. If they saw a rodeo bull that was only three feet tall, I'd think theyd have to have one.
