I dont have any idea when or where Duchesne Countys Chamber meets, and I am sure a lot of other businesses dont either. Whiting OFFICE MANAGER: Ronnie Parrish 4nTRTlSIG: Matthew Evans Dear Editor, . I am writing in regards to Mr. Wilkenons letter of last week entitled Commission erred in the ruling of Tax Sale." Traditionally a county commissioner and the county attorney have sat in on the annual tax sale to assist the county auditor upon request. On this particular parcel of land which Mr. Wilkerson referred to, the bidding proceeded as usual. Upon the auditors judgement, she called the parcel sold, considering elapsed time (bom the last bid. Mr. Wilkerson raised a protest . The auditor looked to me for an opinion. My judgement was that a previous bidder was attempting a bid and that the bidding should proceed. The auditor continued the bidding and the parcel was sold to the highest bidder. At the following commission meeting, as an item on the agenda, the auditor, the county attorney and the commission reviewed the procedure of the sale. We turned to the Utah Code to specifically determine the authority of the auditor and the commission. The code states that the auditor conducts the sale and the commission ratifies the sale within a two week period. Because the auditor conducts the sale, the commission determined that the auditor has the authority to call the sale. As a commissioner, I do not have the authority to override the auditor. As I stated before. the audits has the authority to call the sale. Therefore, the commissioners voted unanimously to uphold the auditors decision as she called it on this particular parcel. The innuendo in last week's article that a county employee received favoredconsiderations is groundless and without any merit whatsoever. Constructive criticism is encouraged rather than political nonsense. Comm. Larry Ross mak-ingth- ago. Donald R. Evans Thinking Out Loud I know why people rush back into burningbuildings. They're aftersomething irreplaceable. Something that cost a pretty penny and mangled their centred nervous system - the family photo. We have a new family portrait hanging on our wall. 1 just polished the glass and hung it straight this morning. Stepping back I thought , Here's one single reason to run straight into flames, tojeopardize your life. Theres never been one like it before and there wont be one like it afterward. Little hrnther quit chewing yourgum! The photographer cajoled . Im going to twist his head off, bigbrother hissed under his breath. I dont know if he was talking to little brother orthe photographer . We were in a people pile, lying on a canvas floor in positions only Tibetan Monks would attempt. We signed up for the casual pose. First wed posed for nearly an hour on hard chairs in the designated waiting area while the camera shutter clicked and the photographer quipped cute lines to several other families. I thought our appointment was at 7:30? My already aggravated husband whispered. It was! They must be running behind, I answered. A new anxiety then descended. It wasnt enough that I had to defend the calendar date for two weeks against all other social events. It wasnt enough that we had to color coordinate all of our clothing and gobble down dinner and brush out teeth and fit into the compact car and be on time. No ... now the anxiety of not pleasing all of the people all of the time came into being. A light perspiration dampened my scalp. One carefully teased coifltire began to deflate like a balloon. I tilted my head, observing the new work of art at the Mecham house. We all look so darn chummy. In the new portrait you cant see the bead ofsweat running down the curve of my spine. You cant tell big brother is hissing and dad is wondering if his bakl spot is going to show. Nope. Were just leaning against each other ... little brother chewing on his gum ... all pleased as punch with smiles that look so natural youd swear they were cut from cream cheese. But, I dont think it will ever happen again. Youd never guess at the trauma onepoor woman went through when they fanned out thedeluxe package of photos before her. There we were in 8x10, 5x7s, 3x4's, and wallet size. No matter what size we were, we were us - right there - alive on photographic paper. They quoted a price, I reached for my check book. Then I remembered. I was sworn by common sense and budget constraints to accept only the photo which was paid for. How could I walk away. Leave my husband and children there - on the cold, scarred table top? Just waiting; waiting to be foamed, waiting to be mailed off all over the country to family and friends! I stood, quivering. The young man helpingme took the largest photo and pushed it inside a frame. We looked even better encircled with carved wood. M v feet were lead. I took my single family portrait tucked under my arm in its plastic sleeve and walked toward the main doors. I didnt look back. Thats when I decided, next time were due for the family photo Im going to buy one of thoee point and shoot disposable grocery store cameras and have someone snap off a roll of film just as were coming out of church. I remember back to 1959 or 1960 when the Tribal members from Duchesne County took over the BIA offices inWashingtonD.C. They were trying to get the government's attention on the lack of completion of the portions of the Central Utah Project that would benefit the Uintah Basin. A reporter asked Orin Curry about e his signature on the documents Central Utah Project possible. He said that it seemed to be for the best at the time. Our cities and our irrigation companies had signed ofT on it for the same reason. We should have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Ute Tribal members in demanding the completion of the portions of the project that would benefit the Uintah Basin and Central Utah. Down in the St. George area they have reservoirs with pipe fines to carry tiie water. They have a heavy brushlike device that can be sent down the pipe to keep it free frofn buildups that might impede the flow. The same thing is possible here. A six or eight foot diameter pipe (bom the base ofFlaming Gorge Elam would cany enough water to meet all the water needs for the Uintah Basin, Price Valley, Nephi, Levan, and on to Delta. The surveying was done for a canal to supply those areas. I believe a pipeline is far superior to a canal because evaporation and spillage would not waste portions ofthe water . The technology exists. We were apportioned the water in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir to supply the needs of those areas.
