Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 10 Volume X Issue V June 15, 2004 Wildflowers in Ogden Valley Narrative compiled by Shanna Francis Photos taken by Shanna Francis Every season in Ogden Valley is my favorite season. But I especially enjoy the wildflowers that late spring and early summer bring. Walking around my yard and neighborhood this past week, I came across a number of wildflowers that I thought would be fun to share with our readers. I had a difficult time identifying a few of them. Perhaps you can help. If you have come across any wildflowers in Ogden Valley that you would like to share, please send in your pictures and any information about them that you have. Having a difficult time identifying them? Maybe we can help. Send photos to: Part of the lily family, wild onions can be found at different elevations and in varied soil types throughout the west. All onion species are edible. The blossoms can vary in color from white to pink, red, or purple. Mule-ear belongs to the sunflower family and can grow up to 2 feet tall. It is usually found on open hillsides in higher valleys and mountains, and blooms May through July. Indians used the root as food. Arrowleaf balsamroot is closely related to Mule-ear. If you have photos of any of these, please send them into the paper to share with our readers. Please note, information on these wildflowers was taken from the books Desert Plants of Utah produced by the Cooperative Extension Service, Utah State University (printing/publishing date not given); and Wild Wildflowers of the West by Edith S. Kinucan and Penney R. Brons (1991). Desert sandwort is a perennial that is branched from the root, creating a shrub-like plant. Its stems are slender and up to 18 inches long. It has numerous leaves near its base and a few scattered up the stems. Potentilla, or Cinquefoil, is a member of the rose family. It usually grows in damp to wet soil. It can be found in June to early August, depending on the species and elevation. Its leaves are edible. Both domestic livestock and wild animals like to browse on this plant, which retains its leaves during the winter. Its leaves can be used as a tea. I call this flower a wild daisy. It is related to the sunflower. Lupine can grow to over 3 feet tall with its flowers varying in color. Lupine can be found in both the deserts and high mountains of Utah and in dry and moist soils. Fleabane ranges in size from 4 to 24 inches tall and can be white, pink, blue, or lavender. It blooms May through August. Sweetpea occupies sandy or gravelly slopes in the sagebrush-juniper areas of western Utah. It spreads with underground stems and often forms thick stands eight to eighteen inches tall. In May and June it produces flowers that vary in color between deep bluepurple and pink-lavender. Sticky geranium, or what I call wild geranium, can grow to 2 feet high. It is a member of the domesticated geranium family. There are about 9 different species of the wild geranium located in the Rocky Mountain area. They can have white flowers or the more common lavender. Elk, deer, moose, and even bear love to forage on this plant. Huntsville 6 BD, 2.5 BA Over 1 acre. Gorgeous lake & mountain. views! $349,000!
