Out of seven runners, Troy Hanks placed 2nd in 1A Division, with others following in 11th, 14th, 18th, 19th and 28th places. This is Manila's second year of having a cross country team. Backrow, Jeff Kippen, Coby Steen, Troy Hanks, Coach Tim Walker and Justin Collett. Front row, Sean Morton, Clint Morton and Carl Morton. Local youth finishes 2nd in nation Trent Romane started competing in Casting Kids three years ago. His first two years, Romane tied for first on the State level but lost in a cast off. But for Romane, the third time was the charm. He won first in the State, and as a State winner, traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., where he competed against 10 other youth for the title of Western Region National Champion. After competition competi-tion in Knoxville, the field was narrowed nar-rowed to five Regional Champions that would meet in Greensboro, N.C., in August to compete for the National Title. Over 155,000 children competed in the Casting Kids last year nation wide through local competitions. This was narrowed to 97 through State competitions which are divided divid-ed into two age levels, 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. In addition to competing for local prizes the finalist traveling to North Carolina would be competing com-peting for over $20,000 in scholarship scholar-ship money. Romane practiced on the average of an hour a day in preparing for the different levels of competition. Casting is an individual sport which requires a lot of self-discipline to practice each day alone. There are three different casts that must be mastered. Participants cast at a target tar-get first from 10 feet, then 20, and 30 feet using the flip, pitch and over hand cast. The casting kids competition in North Carolina was held as part of the Bass Masters Classic. Participants received hundreds of dollars worth of prizes that were donated by sponsors. Names were placed in a hat and drawn out for the order that each contestant would compete. Romane's name was drawn out first, and as he stepped forward, all eyes were watching. Romane scored 130 out of a possible 150 total, which was good enough to hold off the next two competitors. But the third opponent op-ponent scored a 140, which was good enough for first place. Romane took second place in the nation, which earned him a $2,000 scholarship. In addition, the local Bass club and the state affiliation will each receive a $1,000 check to help the local units. Romane is starting competition soon with the hopes of advancing to nationals again this year. He is in hopes of winning first this next year but says that even if he never wins, just going on the trips and meeting other contestants is lots of fun. Vote 'YES' on Propositions A & B The Vernal Police Officer's Association has voted to sup port the additional funding proposal dedicated for road improvement project within Vernal City (Proposition A & B). In responding to emergency calls, along with routine patrol operations, our patrol officers have noticed problem areas in regard to road conditions within Vernal City. Due to the police officer's concern over these areas, we believe that the needed road improvements are a safety issue - "Better roads are safer roads" - which translates into reduced maintenance costs on everyone's vehicles, as W3ll as the reduction in traffic accidents, when road conditions condi-tions are a possible contributing factor. Other conditions for supporting this legislation would be that improved roads enhance property values, as well as giving our city a cleaner more well-kept appearance, which draws more prospective residents to our area. On behalf of the Vernal Police Officer's Association, we would like to encourage Vernal City residents to vote "Yes" on November 3rd for Propositions A&B.
