Show Lady Utes lose bid in state soccer title The Lady Ute soccer team achieved their first-ever opportunity opportuni-ty to play in the state quarterfinal tournament. After winning the interregional in-terregional playoff game against Tooele, the Lady Utes traveled to Park City. Uintah ended their sue-' ccssful season suffering a 2 - 0 loss to the Miners. Bolstering good late season momentum, mo-mentum, the Lady Utes shut out their last four opponents before meeting Park City. However, a bid for the state title looked ominous. Coach Ed Browning knew early that his team would face either Ben Lomond or Park City in the first round of state action. Sometimes strangers give children harmful treats. Never eat any treats until your Mom or Dad say it's okay. that the Lady Utes were capable of advancing but it would require some exceptional play. Both teams were considered heavy championship champi-onship contenders. After getting past Uintah, Park City met Ben Lomond in the semifinal round and lost. Ben Lomond marcjied on to win the 3A-championship title. "We played good ball," Coach Browning said referring to the Park City battle. "But we just didn't muster the same intensity that we had against Tooele and the earlier games." Browning is already looking forward for-ward to Uintah's prospects for 1999. "We'll lose four seniors but will have seven returning starters for next year," he said. According to Browning, Wasatch and Lehi will also have several players returning next season. Browning was pleased with the level of play that sophomore goalkeeper goal-keeper Andrea Walker and her defensive de-fensive teammates produced. He said that Walker allowed only two goals in the last five games and those were in the Park City game. Browning expects Walker' to be a factor on next year's team and hopes she can hone her skills further fur-ther by attending clinics and training train-ing camps during the off season. "We should be contenders for the region title next year," he added. Packers undefeated The undefeated Packers took two more, wins last week in the Youth Football League. The team defeated the Raiders 34-0 and the 49ers 48-0. In the game against the Raiders, quarterback Mason Smuin went three for three passing, two for touchdowns and running for two more touchdowns. Joey Collins had two touchdowns and LJ Jackson had one touchdown. touch-down. The defense was led by Skylar Massey with eight tackles and Joey Collins had seven tackles. Mike Evans had one interception. Mason Smuin had a fumble recovery. Against the 49ers, the team scored 26 points in the first quarter. This allowed for substituting of players. On offense, Smuin again led the team with two of three passing, two for touchdowns. Mike Doherty had two touchdowns, touch-downs, LJ Jackson two touchdowns, touch-downs, Skylar Massey and Joey Collins each had a touchdown. The defense dominated the game and was lead by Joey Collins with nine tackles, Skylar Massey with seven tackles, Bryan Long an interception and Mike Evans recovered a fumble. fum-ble.
