At present, about 400,000 ducks are residing on Utah marshes. About 70 percent of these ducks are pintail and d teal. Were looking at an average opener, but this could change within a matter of days, says Tim Provan, Wildlife Resources water-fobiologist. Storms from the north could push birds into the area or out of the green-winge- wl area. A successful hunt is often de- says pendent on the weather, Provan. For example, a million ducks on the marshes might or might not provide a very good opener depending on the conditions. However, with just the right weather conditions, a comparatively small flock could give hunters an excellent opening. Last year, 367,265 ducks were harvested in Utah during the season. There is ample water on all Wildlife Resources waterfowl management areas. However, Great Salt Lake has receded considerably. Bear River Bay is practically dry and no airboat launches are usable. There are very few ducks. Normally, Bear River Bay will hold about migrant ducks near the 100,900 opening of the season. The goose population is excellent throughout the state. Many geese have been reported moving between marshes and fields in local areas.. This year, the goose season has been extended eleven days to the end of December. Possession limits on geese have also been increased. Goose populations have increased significantly over the past decade. Last years harvest was 24,654, compared to 18,957 in 1972; Daily bag and possession limits remain the same as in preceding years. Newton Reservoir, 15 miles northwest of Logan, was treated on September 16. Wide Hollow Reservoir near Escalante will be treated on October 6. Both reservoirs will be planted with fish next year and opened to fishing in brass, wood, ceramic and glass HANGING FIXTURES LJU 1983. Glenn Davis, Wildlife Resources fisheries biologist, said that Newton Reservoir was once prime fishery, but more recently algae growth and subsequent oxygen depletion have hindered an effective management program. The bass, yellow perch, crappie and carp reservoir populating this were in poor condition. Next spring an aerator will be put on Newton Reservoir to prevent oxygen depletion. The Newton Wildlife Federation has volunteered to pay the power bills for the aerator, and will also provide labor to build a shelter to house the compressor. g Present plans are to plant trout in the reservoir next fall. However, if the water temperature is too warm, Newton Reservoir will be managed as a warm-watfishery. The trout fishery in the Wide Hollow Reservoir has been declining after illegal plantings of bass and bluegil. Both of these species have demonstrated slow growth and fishing pressure has been slow. Davis warns that planting of fish by individuals or organizations other than the Division of Wildlife Games Played Sept. Theres nothing worse than to get the wrong species into the wrong lake. You can knock the balance of nature out so easily. The team has been working on their spotting techniques since school started. Their coach, Michael Brown, said, Its really tough being in the right place at the right time. Youve really got to have lots of teamwork. The girls appear to see the importance of teamwork. Mrs. Brown believes this season will be more difficult than last because the team doesnt have any seniors for this years competition. Tracie Sumner has expert skills on the parallel bars. Her talent should compensate for the lack of seniors. The team, consisting of 30 girls has not had a single injury in their practicing involving the beam, bars, vault, and floor exercises.
