A team of 150 pounders from Layton did a number Saturday on their counterparts from who reOgden. The young Lancers-to-bpresent Central and North Layton Junior High Schools, overpowered Ogden 43-- and it might have been worse. Coach Keith Wixom his 25 players freely, and tried not to run up the score. , The Davis County School District dropped football for junior high schools last year, so : the athletes of that age turned to the WFFL . programs to stay in the game. conOgden City adopted the middle-schocept for sixth, seventh and eighth graders last year but has a football program for ninth graders at Ben Lomond and Ogden High Schools. Coach Keith Wixom of Laytons 150 pound team recognizes the seemingly unfair advantage his team has over the likes of Ogden, but ' is unable to do anything about it.' We would prefer to play their junior high and ninth grade teams, he said, but they arent allowed to play WFFL teams. The Layton players would rather play junior high school football. But dont get down on Layton. All of their four opponents are not in the same predicament as Ogden. They play teams from Bountiful, Hill AFB and Clearfield, too. The Clearfield team consists of players from Clearfield, Syracuse and Roy, and the Bountiful team is talent. Layton beat loaded with its ninth-grad-e Clearfield 0 and Bountiful 26-In Saturdays game, six men scored seven touchdowns for Layton. Robert Ferneau ran one in from 20 yards, and later caught a TD pass from quarterback Bart Vernon. Vernon scored one touchdown on a keeper, and also threw touchdown strikes to Mike Roberts and to David LeFevre. Jim Batchelor bulled into the end zone from the one yard line and Nicky Romero, a 71 pound giant on the team, scored on a five yard end sweep. - . Frank Gallegos kicked two extra points for Layton and Mike Roberts made a pair of conversions by running one in and by passing to Dave LeFevre for another. The Layton kids are tough on defense, beginning with noseguard Todd Miya, Tackles Chris Sessions and Casey Suchecai, and ends Jim Cartwright and Mike Roberts. Robert Ferneau is the leading ground gainer for Layton, but Bart Vernon and Jim Batchelor get their share of yardage. On the offensive line, Coach Wixom looks to David LeFevre, tight end, and to Joe Midkiff and Jeff Nabor. Other stars for the team include Shane Schuessler, Lyle Norse, John Burgett, Paul Lovelace, John Suchcicki, Joel Hansen, Brandon Hannons, Corey Sondrup, Trenton Walton, Corey Davis and Tony Dalton. The team is coached by Keith Wixom, Jesse Aranda and Ross LaFevre. Coach Wixom is a product of Grand Junction High School in Colorado, where he played football. He lived for a time in California and coached little league football there. He feels that the Pop Warner football program of California is superior to WFFL football because the larger cities have more teams and have an excellent draft system for selecting players. California may have ten football teams per city to one or two for Utah, said Wixom, and every game is tough. In Utah, you may have good teams and patsies playing each other. Assistant Coach Jesse Aranda played football for Layton High School in 1973 under Coach Gary Hansen, who is still at the helm for the Lancers. Aranda went on to play ball for Coach Meeks at the University of Utah.
