HIGH SCHOOL MARATHON. Munn Cannon ..Winner Francis Fletcher Second Frank TJpham Third MUNN CANNON won lhe modified marathon race of tho Salt Lake high school yesterday afternoon. Francis Fletcher finished In second sec-ond position and Frank Upham won third place. Cannon Is a senior, Fletcher' Is a junior and Upham represents repre-sents the sophomore class.- Cannon, Fletcher and Upham will each receive five points. These points will count In the competition In the class track meet next week. The lime made by Cannon for the race was 11 minutes und 17 seconds. sec-onds. The course of the race was east from Lhe high school to First West, thence nor Hi on. First West to Seventh NorLh, a I which point the runners turned west to Third West and thence south on Thltd West to the high school. The distance was about two und a quarter miles. The race was successful In every way and the enthusiasm shown by tho youthful youth-ful runners promises to create much frlendlv rivalry in the coming track meet, which will be held next Friday and Saturday. Medals will be given to the three men who gain the highest number of points. Cannon Never Headed. At the start of yesterday's race Cannon Can-non took tho lead and held it. lo the end. Cannon ran a splendid race and also used good generalship In picking the road. Cannon, who won yesterday's race, was a member of the Deseret gymnasium team in the Commercial club run December Decem-ber 0. He wns well up lu that race and It was duo to his speud that the Deseret Des-eret team won the banner. In yesterday's nice he showed much Improvement anil should make a good distance man for the high school. IIu will probably run the mile and the half mile. Francis Fletcher Jlnishcd tho race In strong condition and probably could have run another mile, had It been necessary. He gave Cannon a hurd race throughout, but was not accustomed lo the roads. Fletcher stands a good chance of winning ono of the medals, as he Is an able all-around all-around athlete. He will enter the J00 and 2110-yard dashes, the 220 hurdles, the hammer throw, the shotput and the discus, dis-cus, together with the polo vault. Strong at Finish. Frank Upham, who finished third, is a sophomore, and should make a good man in the coming meet. He was In the Commercial club run. and lu yesterday's race showed a great Improvement. Upham Up-ham Is ono of the best athletes of the sophomore class. He made a poor start yesterday, hut in the last mile gradually went to third place and held II to the end. William Gibson, fourth, finished in the best or condition and showed no signs of fatigue. Donald Ryan wan the first freshman to tlnlsh and camo In fifth. Ho was in good shape. George O'Connor of the junior class was the sixth man to finish. Spencer Held, a senior, and his brother Glen finished In tho seventh and eighth positions, respectively. Glen Reld Is a freshman. Gibson, Ryan and O'Connor will be awarded three points each for llnlshing within the six-man limit, and Glen Reld, Spencer Held and Bert McICeith get one point each. : Other entrants finished in the following follow-ing order: McKelth Burt.
