"We'll be better than in the past couple of years," Cowan continued, "I don't think there's much question about that. "But so are a lot of other teams in Region Two. It's going to be an interesting league this year." So far as his own squad is concerned, the coach said that it's still pretty early to say where it might fit in the league race. However, the Jags should be a gopd shooting squad this season. "I think we've also got some good ball handlers," Cowan added, "and the kids all seem to have good basketball sense. It's a good group and very coachable. We're optimistic over here." Among the four players returning as seniors, stated Cowan, is 3 d Mike Curtis, 3 inside men Kevin Draper and Brian 7 Hardman and guard Troy Taylor. A junior, who, the coach noted, should see a lot of playing time is 0 guard Scott Briggs. From there Duane Despain gained four, Thorne six and then Thorne broke through for nine to pick up the first down. A penalty against Sky View put the Ball on the 48, and three running plays and a penalty gave Jordan a first and five from the 14. On a quick count, Deuel faked a hand off and raced around left end for the score. Myrick kicked the extra point for a 14-- 7 score. On Sky View's next possession, their fine running back, Ryan Larsen, broke four tackles as he scored from the twenty and again the kick was good. A pass play from Elliott to big tight end Wade Lindley was the big ground gainer in this drive. With just minutes to go in the quarter Jordan could not advance and Deuel kicked to the Sky View 31. Nevada Meet Draws Local Horseshoers South Jordan, competing with some of the best pitchers from across the U.S. and Canada, placed first in his division during the annual Pepper-mil- l Horseshoe Pitching Tournament held Friday and Saturday in Mesquite, Nevada. Two other Green Sheet area pitchers, Gary Hughes of Taylorsville and Richard Buchanan of Draper took fourth in their respective classes. Competition was held in Class A through L with top 13 qualifiers in each division taking part. A total of 150 pitchers took part in the tournament. Crane's victory came in the Class D, where he posted a 10-- 2 record against competition from California and Canada. For his efforts, he recived approximately $200 in prize money. Hughes pitched in the B class and Buchanan in Class C. Though Mesquite is normally home to good weather this time of year, Friday and Saturday saw cold, damp and windy conditions which may have affected some of the scores. The Peppermill tourney is one of the biggest in the country, with the exception of the nationals. aer i U 23 SOUTH JORDAN. But, on the fourth try, the Sky View runner barely made it into the end zone for the final 28-- 7 score. Coach Russ Thompson was very disappointed when interviewed after the game, but felt that the Sky View team had made third down plays when they had to and agreed that the penalties and fumbles, as well as the loss of Grant, had hurt his team He did feel however that the record of 10-- which the Jordan team had realized was a great record and was glad that they had done so well as a tribute to Coach Watrin. Coach Thompson said that, along with offensive coach Mark Hunter, that Bill Noble, who coached the defensive line, Dan May, the offensive line coach, and Steve Pearson, who coached the defensive backs, were all due a lot of praise for the great season the kids had.
