JUordan preached to the assembled tmultltude The platform was crowded fwlth prominent men and women of all Creeds Brlgham street In the front vas thronged and B street on the west was occupied for half a block The Thunder storm and smart showers of the afternoon laid the dust and cooled the atmosphere to a pleasant temperature tempera-ture and while the threatening state of the weather deterred Mayor members of the City Council Coun-cil and clvlo officials The prominent Catholic families were well represented and members of other churches including i includ-ing prominent Mormon church a most Important event not only In the history of the Catholic church In Utah but also an event in the history I of the State Among those who assisted E In seating the people and seeing to their the layIng lay-Ing of the cornerstone but also the consecrating of the spot on which the altar will be erected and of the foundations founda-tions upon which the four walls of the structure will be reared The laying lay-ing of the stone and the acts of consecration con-secration were done by Bishop Scan I j Ian assisted by the visiting bishops and the local clergy and Vere witnessed ti I wit-nessed by Archbishop Rlordan from one of the windows of the residence of Bishop Scanlan At their conclusion I archbishop was escorted by Father Klely master of ceremonies from the I residence to the temporary pulpit near the corner stone from which ho preached a most eloquent sermon especially suitable for the occasion THE ARCHBISHOP ELOQUENT The archbishop has a fine clear I resonant voice and graceful easy gestures Ills discourse which was liberal broad and full of brotherly feeling showed him l to be a man of learning and culture and with a heart and sympathies not confined to those of his own church but large enough I I to take In all the world IMPOSING PROCESSION The ceremonies began at 515 l when r 250 of the Sundayschool children led 3 by Father Keenan marched two abreast from Bishop Scanlans residence i resi-dence around the platform to the vicinity of the cornerstone The procession pro-cession Included six boys from the ici St Anns orphanage aurpllccd us acolytes
