Show TROUBLE WITH YAQUIS i I Gen Torres Mokes Report of Progress Pro-gress Agaigst the Indians City of Mexico July 22Gen Luis Torres Governor of Sonora and con manderinchlef of the forces against the YaQuls has come to this city to make a detailed report of the progress of tho campaign President Diaz and Minister of War Relse From an Interview Inter-view with him it Is gathered tat the Yaquis have been pretty well scattered and broken up Into small bodies and are I not seriously troublesome at present Several batches of prisoners have been sent to Guadalajara Iraputo and other places with the view oC making useful citizens out of them The General has followed strictly the policy of the Government Gov-ernment In dealing with them which Is to give them every reasonable imjuce ment to return tp their farms or get them employment elsewhere without being any more severe thaji Is absolutely abso-lutely necessary The Yaquis are really a superior people peo-ple The large companies operating In Sonora say they make the best workmen work-men but there are turbulent spirits among them who are always ready to make trouble The last trouble which ended by pacification In 18D7 was expected ex-pected to end the difficulty between the Government and Indians and very good concessions were inatle by the Government Govern-ment but the Indians had kept their part of the arrangement less than two years when they were persuaded just after an extensive fiasco to take up arms again The Yaquis are splendid fighters know the country weU and have In some cases ambushed the traps doing more or less damage The whole affair 1 has been nothing but a series of guerrilla guer-rilla skirmishes One great disadvantage disadvan-tage Is that at certain periods the weather Is so excessively hot that it js almost Impossible to move troops while the Indians arc used to this and are not especially Inconvenienced |
