assist In I the laying of the cornerstone will remain re-main In the city for a few days I have quoted I rejoiced at the things that wero said to me We shalfgo In to the house of the Lord And a Joy brethren akin to this is ours today To us Is given the privilege privi-lege of placing the cornerstone of a great building which when completed will be the house of God the temple of prayer the communicants shrine beneath be-neath whose roof will repose the eternal eter-nal Son of God which will be to all you people of Salt Lake what the Universal Uni-versal church of Christ Is In the entire en-tire world the instrument of teaching Gods truth and of pouring into the souls of men his divine grace CAUSE FOR GREAT JOY To you who have IIvea here for many years I can very well Imagine the Joy of today When you go back only a few years ago and think of tho little flock of only a few people gathered gath-ered about tho altar of an humblo church and then today begin a building build-ing which will rank with the great cathedrals of the country I can well Imagine that your joy must be that of the royal prophet and you look forward for-ward with desire to that still mote glorious day when you will enter into the house of tho Lord completed and ornamented and fitted In all Its details de-tails for the great mission which is given to a cathedral church And you may ask me those especially espe-cially who are not of my faith what docs this church stand for What are I P PRoCE NGfl L1rk r 4 1 I I i iliWii4 i cp 4 t a1Ni iH 1 I u4J a rz i I 1 z71c t ft grouped the most tender memories 1 I and associations of our lives Therefore There-fore there are motives why Catholic people should build their churches and why they should be generous In sustaining sus-taining them FOR ALL THE PEOPLE But the church stands for more than this The Church of Christ stands for all the people not merely Catholics I but those outside the itIe of tho Catholic Catho-lic chqrch It stands as a complete exponent of the whole revelation of Christ There is no other Christian so called denomination the world that pretends today to teach the original teachings of Christ In all their fullness I The theory of today Is that as the times change religious truths must 1 change with them that religious truth I is not above the speculations of the I human intellect that things must be added to and things must be dropped I from the original revelations to suit the requirements of the changed conditions con-ditions of things The Catholic church I says that In all its essential elements In everything that constitutes the essence es-sence of the Christian religion the church must be like her founder who was yesterday who Is today and who Is the same forever In Its essential elements there can be no change for this reason that Christ placed his church not among the mutable things of life but lifted It above the speculations specula-tions of human Intellects because it is I to be aguide unerring and unchanging unchang-ing In the things that belonnr to the I soul and the most Important thing in I life after all is the salvation of the soul and the sign must be so clear so beyond the region of speculation the path that leads to heaven must be flooded with such light that the lowliest low-liest and the poorest and the most ignorant may understand It and walk therein without fear of going astray We can afford to go astray in the things of life we can afford to make I a mistake in the things that belong to human science because a day will come when for you and me the problems 1 I prob-lems of science will have no Interest r But Christ loves you and me with an 1 Infinite love and is anxious that you and I shall go to our eternal estates and bo thero forever And therefore Christs church In its essential conditions Is unchangeable Therefore the Catholic church teaches in every age the same doctrine In every clime the selfsame voice Is heard and therefore this church will I stand here as the Catholic church stands everywhere saying to the people peo-ple one God one faith one baptism one unchanging creed and revelation safeguarded from nll error by the protection pro-tection of God himself the holy city placed upon tho mountain top and beneath be-neath them the everlasting arms FOR UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD Brethren the church stands for more than this and this church will stand as the church stands In everyplace every-place for the complete exemplification of the brotherhood of man one God one family on earth no caste no prlv ilogcd classes all coming within the portals of Its I temples standing upon the same footing children of the same father others of the same Jesus Christ our Lord This then I say Is the exemplification of tho most j 1 I p I I t doctrine the historic church of Christ has ever been loyal down to our days I The Catholic element of our great Nation Na-tion Is today most loyal to this democratic demo-cratic principle founded upon the life of our blessed Lord and upon the utterances ut-terances of his apostles Neither Jew nor Gentile says SU Paul neither Greek nor Roman neither bond nor free but all are one In Christ Jesus WHAT IT WILL SIGNIFY And so brethren It stands for that and because It stand for that It commends com-mends Itself I not only to Catholic people peo-ple hut to all who are outside the fold of the Catholic church And therefore my dear good people this new buildIng build-Ing of yours when completed will stand first for our own people as the house of God as the shrine of prayer as the temple of the soul as the dwelling place of the Lord eternal In the person of his divine son It will stand for all the rest of the people as a complete exponent of the entire revelation of Christ It will be an embodiment of the doctrine that we arc brothers In Christ members of Christs family with our father who is In heaven and It will stand as a most potent factor by its influence leavening with popular I popu-lar and democratic principles the entire en-tire society over which its inlluenco extends I And therefore I say to you let stone be placed on atone let stone be fitted Into C stonef tIts walls go up and when from the topmost llnlal of Its tower the golden cross shall be placed It will throw over your city from Its vantage point a wet and solemn blessing over this good city of yours with Its homes of domestic peace and joy Its temples 6f learning its marts of commerce with the busy hum of traffic andof Industry in its streets and farther still over this beautiful valley framed by these eternal mountains moun-tains fit symbol of the church that after 1900 years Is no mere antique Is no heirloom the past not a stono from ancient buildings long fallen into ruin and decay but after 1DOO years stands here today In the presence of this energetic live people as strong as vigorous as full of life as on the day when It came down from the upper r chamber of Jerusalem and began its conquest of the world IT WILL ENDURE What there in the world that can be compared with it Look around you and give mo an answer Here it stands today with Its pontiffs bishops and priests and its two hundred millions of members and the feeling has gone abroad among those outside the fold that after all the older church the first church will be the last church and the church that can keep Its doctrines intact in-tact for 1300 years has a right to live and the church that carries in its bosom centuries of life is not going to die I And therefore it stands I say for undecaying spiritual life and I hope and pray that its cross will shed a blessing on this city and on this valley that It will teach you and all men as you move about and look at it at what a cost was our redemption bought that it was on the cross that the church of Christ was born As the sun comes up from the morning In the east and its first rays gild It and as the last rays of the same sun sink In the west and give It Ji parting glow It will say to you In all your homes Seek first and above all things the justice of the kingdom king-dom of God and nil the other things the Inferior things In the way of eating and drinking and the wherewith to be clothed these things will be given you If not in much abundance at least insufficiency in-sufficiency But seek first the kingdom of God and his Justice and all things else will be given unto you This will be its lesson May It sink deep into your hearts my beloved people peo-ple I thattk you for what you have done here In making it possible to begin be-gin this I ask you to continue your good work until the joy of the dedication dedica-tion day may be yours and mine |
