Show THE ARCHBISHOPS SERMON i I Eloquent Discourse tho Distinguished Distin-guished Prelate = 1 The sermon of Archbishop 1 Rlordan I was as follows T In tho num6 of the Father the So 1fl and the Holy Ghostr amen Belqvcil I brethren of the clergy and the < Jalety 1 Tho words of the royal prophet David arc appropriate this solejnii oocagloq I rejoiced he says at tho things that wcro salrl to me We shall go Into tho housoof tho Lord These wordK were spoken by the prophet ba era tho erection of the tomnlo or Joj rxusaloin He wished to bulldlt but the honor was reserved for his lion tho man of ponce not him wtyo wosa man of war But the very thought of the prUvll Ko of bulUUnsr a temple to thom tho-m iat high God tlirllloa big very heart I with Joy and as he looked into the future I fu-ture tho glory of the dedication day L I mado him utter these words which I Its uses For what purpose was It built What end will It serve What I does It mean for this city and the pco plo of It When a building IB erected we know the purpose for which It Is Intended When men put up a hall of medicine we know precisely what the purpose of It Is When a hall of legal science Is erected we arc not In doubt as to the things that will be cone i therein When a mart of commerce raises Its front before thc people wo know the object of the building and you have a right to ask mo whrit does I church stand for what docs It mean I Why should the people be asked to give their meana and make sacrifices for its erection Us ornamentation and Its I maintenance WHAT IT STANDS FOR First of all my beloved brethren for Catholic people tho church stands I as the home of God It is the house of God tho temple of prayer We believe be-lieve that the divine Savior of the wOIld when he became a man In them the-m slery of the Incarnation proposed to remain with the children men un I til the consummation of the world lie came not to depart lie came to be with them In every ago and In every clime aa their father and their friend the way the truth and the life tho nourishment and sustenance of their souls In the mystery of the Incarnation incarna-tion ho was God he became man and the fllvino person God and man remains re-mains with us IJc finds his place in every tabernacle there to listen to our prayers there to be the food and con sojatlpn of our souls And for this icarfbn above all others to tho Catholic Catho-lic heart the church In dear Wo can say with the proph We love the glory of the house of God and the place of his habitation ATound tho most sacred associations associa-tions of our lives arc grouped Then at Its font wo arc born again of water and the Holy Spirit We become chil dreu of God and take our places oa members of the great family of Christ I There in after years we receive the grace and strength of confirmation I There we bring our lnstalnod l souls to the gOO lltslch t and obtain pardon par-don stooped In tears of contrition and of sorrow Thorerwo receive the life giving food of the body and blood of Christ There before its altdrs arc we brought when life has departed to ru i f calve for the last Lime tho blessings of tho great historic church of ChrIst andover I and-over our remains the last mytrs aw I said Therefore for the Catholic people peo-ple tlm < hiWh la the dearest place on I earth for around It aa I D idaro complete brotherhood that the world has ever seen The rich and highborn the gifted and those who have the advantage of social position stand on a level with the lowly and the poor the child of the peasant kneeling at the altar rail with the son and daughter of the prince the subject prostrate on the same pavement with the king all brothers of the same Lord and mast lAnd l-And therefore there Is nothing like It In the world Every other place you gO there is of necessity a distinction Some are greater than others This Is heavens first law and therefore we must conform to this law but in the church of Christ there Is tho tabernacle taber-nacle there la I the Lord and master his children all redeemed by the same blood are asking for the same graces all destined for the same home and all spiritualized by the same saving In fluence And therefore for this brotherhood for which It stands from this complete exemplification of the brotherhood man It comes to be the most popular and the most democratic Institution of the world and for that reason it leaches more than anything else In our country the equality of nan and equal privileges to all classes of our citizens BLESSING OF EQUALITY When our blessed Lord came from heaven what did he do He camo down and touched with a saving hand all classes of tho community the rich and tho Intelligent the educated and thc Ignorant I tho high born and those of lowly birth and going down to thou who won not recognized under pagan law as men but as things he went down to the classes known as slaves and putting his hand upon the head of a alavcsgald i Come with me and the shackles of his slavery fell from about him and the poor slave lifted up by the influence of Christ Into the brotherhood of the young church felt at onco that there was a throne for him aa for his master close by tho throne of the Son of God in heaven And this feeling of equality In the spiritual order that In the things of God and In the life to come and that in all things that belong to the soul all men arc equal this thought 1 say filtered down until at last the Idea of equal civil rights and equal civil privileges privi-leges began to leaven the entire society so-ciety until lit a few years we find It attaining Ita growth and full lower in the mediaeval laws which recognized at once tho necessity of constitutional government and made the people the repository of the nations power so 1 that all government vas or the people |
