Show Rusty Guernsey of Salt Lake City was in first place after 27 holes of action in the Eastern Utah Petroleum Invitational Invita-tional Golf Classic with a 5 under par score and the only thing that was separating him from the first place check were the final nine holes on the Dinaland Golf course. Reed Goodliffe of Brigham City was 4 under par and Tom Costello of Provo was three under par. A rough journey was encountered by Guernsey on the final holes as he finished finish-ed one shot out of first place at 139 and Costello placed first at 138. All members of the foursome, Guernsey, Guern-sey, Costello, Goodliffe and Bob Betley, turned in good tee shots at number one. Guernsey missed a birdie by a few inches and pars were gained by Guernsey, Guern-sey, Costello, Betley and Costello. Hole number two was a disaster for Betley and a paradise for Guernsey, Goodliffe and Costello. Betley knocked the ball out of bounds into a field, and was forced to take another shot from the tee. Guernsey and Costello gained good shots and Goodliffe was in the rough. Guernsey and Goodliffe placed their balls on the green on their second shots and Costello was over the green. Guernsey, Goodliffe and Costello gained gain-ed birdies and Betley netted a bogey. The standings after two holes were: Guernsey, -6; Goodliffe, -5 and Costello, -4. Goodliffe dropped out of the running for first place in the tournament with a double bogey seven on number three. Goodliffe hit his first shot out a bounds. Costello and Betley netted birdies and Guernsey nabbed par. Guernsey was 6 under and Costello 5 under. Goodliffe dropped to 3 under par. Costello, Guernsey and Goodliffe netted net-ted pars on number four and Betley pocketed a birdie. Goodliffe's tee shot landed in the rough by some bushes and the rest of the crew gained good tee shots. Guernsey reached the green on his second shot, but he was long. Goodliffe was just off the green and delivered a good chip shot. Betley and Costello were on the green. Costello left his golf ball short on his birdie attempt and tapped in the ball for a par. Betley 's shot hit the lip and rolled in for a birdie. Guernsey also left his birdie attempt short. Costello began his charge for the golf , classic title on number five. Costello knocked in a four foot shot for a birdie, but Guernsey remained one stroke ahead of Costello at -6 to -5 with a birdie of his own.Goodliffenetted a birdie to go 4 under par. Costello gained a good tee shot and put in a 15 footer for a birdie three. Guernsey Guern-sey was short on his par four attempt and had to settle for a bogey five, which dropped him into second place at -5 and placed Costello in first place at -6. Guernsey also encountered problems on number seven as he netted a bogey five. Guernsey put his tee shot in the right rough and Costello was just below the sand trap. Guernsey's second shot was on the green, but long and Costello placed his golf ball close to the pin, but it rolled long. Guernsey was short on his next shot and finished with bogey five. Costello was. short and gained a par four to take a lead of -7 to -5 over Guernsey. Guern-sey. Goodliffe parred the hole to stay at -4 and Betley nabbed a bogey and dropped drop-ped to -3. Costello gained problems on number eight, as a bogey reduced his lead to one stroke. Betley's tee shot landed in the left rough on top of a hill and he was given a drop because his golf ball was located right next to two crushed pop cans, which were buried halfway in the ground. Betley was under a tree and he delivered the ball only a few feet off the green. Guernsey was on the green, but he left his next shot short and settled for a par 4.
