Show Manila judge attends Nevada courses Judge Linda Beckstead, Justice of the Peace for Manila Precinct, Daggett County, recently attended two continuing education courses in Nevada. On June 21 through June 25 she was the guest of the Nevada Judges Association at their annual summer seminar held in Fallon, Nev. Some of the topics discussed were landlord tennant dispute, bombings and hostage taking, drug and alcohol offenders. She received a certificate of completion from Chief Justice E.M. "Al" Gunderson, Nevada Supreme Court. On June 27 she began a two week course at the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada at Reno. Judge Beckstead attended the non-lawyer non-lawyer general session. This is a comprehensive course dealing with fundamental legal procedures, criminal procedure before, during and after trial, elements of criminal offenses, arraignments, preliminary hearings, search and seizure, problems in sentencing and the treatment of civil cases, especially small claims. The class also examined the role of the judge through judicial ethics, and the judges relationship with his or her community and the public. Judicial skills and techniques were improved through legal research methods and communication skills. Many learning techniques were utilized though discussion groups, workshops and demonstrations. |
