SPRY'S PARTY AT GUNNISON. On their way to Claiion, the Jewish colony on the west side of Gunuison valley, George T. Odell and party reached Gunnison a little past 3 o'clock Sunday from Salt Lake by auto, With Mr. Odell were Governor William Spry, Rabbi Charles J. Freund, Harry Seigel of Metropolis, Nev., and William Cluff. The company were joined in this city by County Commissioner C. M, Madsen , Chairman Candlaud of the state land board,, and President Benjamin Brown of the Jewish colony. After a few minutes stay here the trip was made to Clarion, where a welcome arch had been erected by the Jewish colonists. Luncheon was served and Governor Spry besides others of the company spoke and a feeling response made by President Browu. Returning to Gunnison a meeting was held iu the opera house , attend- ed by au immense crowd of persons, In charge waa Bishop James A. Rasmussen, who in choice words welcomed the visiting party from Salt Lake and assured the Jewish colonists present a hearty welcome in Gunnison valley iu the establishing of their colony. The ohairman then introduced Governor William Spry, who expressed ex-pressed his pleasure in seeing the large amount of work done- by the colorjy. He complimented them on their industry, toil, ambition and courage and hoped the people here would join hands with them in developing de-veloping this valley. The governor said he felt suro the Jews at Clarion would prove good citizens and neighbors neigh-bors and they would help make of Gunnison valley one of the most delightful de-lightful spots iu the state of Utah, Governor Spry then branched out on the reclamation spirit characterizing the people of Utah and dilated upon the achievements attained through the efforts of Utah's pioneers under the great leader Brigham Young. He then alluded to a number of important im-portant factors which contributed! to the growth of Utah and admonished the young. men to stay here instead of seeding other states, and help develop de-velop Utah. He avowed' his fealty' to the people aud gave expression to his appreciation of the splendid testimonial of this occasion . George T. Odell followed with a talk on business lines aud especially commended the efforts of the commercial com-mercial club and development league of Salt Lake to furthur the growth cf this state. .- Rabbi Freund was then introduced. Said that previous to hia coming to Utah nearly eight years ago he had known of the Mormons by reputation only. When called by his people to take up a labor in Utah he sought for enlightenment from two Mormon elderB and has since found their words verified. The Rabbi paid a tribute to the late John Henry Smith of Mormon fame and spoke of his admiration of the Mormon people and especially the friendly attitude of their leaders. Of his own people, ha explained the ostracism that led to their being classed among money lenders and brokers, but originally theywere tillers of the soil. With the breaking of prejudice against them, the Jews were going back to the farm. Predicting success for the Clarion people he assured the settlers of this valley of the stability that would characterise their nevu neighbors. neigh-bors. "America is our Palestine and Washington our Jerusalem," he quoted in support of hia claim that the Jews hers would be loyal to the country in which they dwell, Our |
