Use to be considered includes hiking, horseback, mountain bikes, , cars, pickups, vehicles, snowmobiles, all-terra- in Candidate: RobertBob) Durant Charles McAfee is a retired farmer rancherbusinessman from the Lewis area where he was raised. Mr. McAfee attended Fort Lewis College and the University of Colorado where he obtained a B.S. degree in Business. He has been In business throughout his life and was owner of a mercantile store and a bean elevator, and had the first John Deere tractor dealership in the area. Charles and his wife Iris have four grown children. Chuck, Carol, John and Mary. Mr. McAfee has served on the Empire Electric Board of Directors for the past 25 from years and is seeking District 3 (LewlsArriola areas.) Over the years. Mr. McAfee has become acquainted with most of the people In his Director district and feels he knows the needs and concerns of the rural people. He grew up without electricity, saw the Lewis area receive power for the first time and appreciates the role of the REA's. Mr. McAfee states that Empire Electric Is a "cooperative" which means It belongs to those It serves and he would like to see Its members become more Involved In the affairs of the He Is dissatisfied with situation and wants to co-o- p. the Colorado-Ut- e see It resolved and see that the best interest of Empire Electric Is met .. f i ' ft Seeking election for the second time to the Empire Electric Association, Inc. Board of Directors representing District 9 (Dolores area) Is Carlton (Carl) K. Rhembrandt. Carl moved to Dolores In 1978 and set up a ' retirement home. He worked for Routt County from 1985 to 1987, at which time he retired and moved back to Dolores where he now restores antique automobiles. He has been a member for 12 years. Mr. Rhembrandt received countless educational and certifications from 1947 to 1984, and has an Impressive work-relate- d background ranging from commercial painting contractor to field Job-relat- engineer, explosives engineer. Superintendent of Streets and Parks and of Public Works. City ManagerDlrector of Public Construction Works, Superintendent, and Director of Engineering. Mr. Rhembrandt has been on numerous boards in the past 30 years and feels his experience can be an asset to Empire Electric, Carl says he knows most of the employees and feels he has their confidence, and that this relationship Is Important for the smooth operation of the organization. fa i t 1 Districts Robert (Bob) W. Durant Is a candidate for election to Empire Electric's Board of Directors, representing District 8 (east CortezLakvlew areas). Bob is a lifelong resident of this area. He attended grade school in Dove Creek and graduated from Montezuma-Corte- z High School. He attended the University of Colorado for 2 12 years, then transferred to Fort Lewis College where he graduated with a B.A. degree In Business Administration. Bob and his wife Donna have four children, Mark, Steve, Casey and Cody. Mr. Durant Is of Coldwell er BankerWestern Hills Realty. Inc., In Cortez. He has been very involved in community service, having served as president of the Cortez area Chamber of Commerce, Lions CLub and the Four Corners Board of REALTORS, as well as youth sports and a Cub Master. He is a Director of the Realtor Land Institute, and has been a Board member of the Colorado Association of Realtors for three years. Mr. Durant feels there Is a problem In communication between the real estate Industry, electric Industry and the public and that his election to the Board would give him the opportunity to alleviate this problem. He feels his education and experience can be of benefit to the company, and he says he likes to work i Public meetings on forest roads and trails , Districts m- - Pa$,i7 a; David Sanford Is seeking to the Board of Directors, representing District 8 (east CortezLakevlew areas). He was appointed in 1988 to fill the vacancy left by Nick Prinster, and elected In 1989 to fill this unexplred term. Sanford was raised In the northern part of California and earned a B.S. degree In Wildlife Management from Humboldt State College In Areata. He has worked for the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service In six states. Including the Dolores Ranger District David and. his wife Ann have two sons, Jonathan and Joe D. Mr. Sanford returned to this area In 1981 from South Dakota, and Is currently employed by Colorado State University's Southwest Research Center at Yellow Jacket as a research associate. He Is the secretary of the Dolores Soil Conservation District, secretary of the Summit Reservoir and Irrigation Company and also a member of the Mosquito Control Board. Mr. Sanford would like to be so he can continue serving as a Director and implement the training he has received from three previous Director training courses. He says he has gotten a fpel for the electric industry and would like to see some areas of change take place. Mr. with people and make things happen. vehicles, and so forth. Forest administration includes access for fire control and resource management. Roads and trails not needed for public use andor administration will be restored to natural productivity. There are presently 2,600 miles of road, from roads to paved roads. There are approximately 800 miles of trails. To better acquaint the public with the review, the Forest Service is holding meetings to provide details on what the review is all about. Meetings are scheduled at District Ranger Offices as ck high-standa- rd follows: Moab, April 23, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Price, April 24, 7 - 8 p.m. Ferron, April 24, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. (This will be an open house and you may come anytime within the above hours.) Ephriam, May 3, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. (This also will be an open house.) Monticello, May 10, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. , After the meetings, the Forest Service will select a group of individuals having varying interests to serve on Candidate: G. Eugene (Gene) Story has submitted his petition to seek election to represent District 9 (Dolores area) on the Empire Electric Association, Inc.m. Board of Directors. In May of 1989, Gene was appointed to the Board, filling the jxsitlon previously held by Wilson Brumley who resigned after serving 24 years on the Board. Mr. Story now seeks the right to retain this position by vote from the general membership. He has been a member of Empire Electric for 13 years. Gene was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, and moved to Dolores In 1977 where he and his wife Janet maintain their home. They have two grown children. Stephen and Stephanie. He earned a B.S. degree In Forestry from Arizona State College, His M.S. degree In Biology from Northern Arizona University and his Ph.D. In Plant Pathology from Texas A&M in 1969, working Tor the Upjohn Company for eight years prior to moving to this area. In addition to being the owner and manager - of the Outfitter, Mr. Story has served on the Dolores Board of Education and the San Juan Basin Area Vocational-TechnicSchool Board. He is involved in many civic organizations and Is actively involved In the .Dolores River Valley Chamber of al Commerce. Mr. Story said, "1 was appointed to the Board of Empire Electric less than one year ago following the resignation of Wilson to Brumley. It is my desire to continue represent the members of this co-o- p in the management of this distribution facility in all members of a sound, fiscal manner, Empire Electric. I have considerable stake In the future health of our co-o- p by being both a commercial and residential user of and power generated by Colorado-Ut- e distributed by Empire Electric. A Directorship requires a fundamental understanding of sound business practices as well as a fiduciary responsibility to the If elected I will strive to perform these duties in the best Interest of all rate-paye- r. members." Districts Districts District3 Shirley Bauer is seeking election to the Jerry Koskie is a candidate for election the Empire Electric's Board of Directors, District9 G. Eugene (Gene) Story district committees. The a ii Candidate: Shirley Bauer Empire Electric Association. Inc.. Board of Directors, representing District 8 (east CortezLakevlew area). Mrs. Bauer was bom and raised in Oregon and attended Lane Community College In Springfield. Oregon, where she studied accounting for two years. In 1968, she moved to Cortez where she obtained her degree in Accounting from the San Juan School. Basin Area Vocational-TechnicMrs. Bauer Is the owner of the Sunshine al Business Service, which she began in 1985. She Is secretary of the Bauer Lake Club, and Is active in Cub Scouting. Shirley and her husband Roger have three children. Toby, Tonya and Aaron. When asked why she wants to be on the Board of Directors. Mrs. Bauer said "I am concerned with the situation at Colorado-Ut- e and how it affects Empire Electric. I have the time necessary for this position and I always give 150 percent in whatever I do." She feels that her accounting background would help her to be a good Director. representing District 3 (Lewis area). Mr. Koskie was born and raised In Cortez area ' and graduated the from High School. He Montezuma-Corte- z attended Fort Lewis College for two years, then transferred to Colorado State University in Fort Collins where he obtained his B.S. degree In Animal Science and a secondary degree in Agriculture Economics. Mr. Koskie has a farm near Lewis and deals with ONLY Realty. and ranch operation in selling farm land Mr. Koskie served on the Board of the Federal Land Bank of Durango for nine years, and served on the Board of the Farm Bureau as secretaiytreasurer. and is a past president of that organization. Mr. Koskie feels that competition Is good In all things and that a person should have more than one candidate to vote for In the Director election at Empire Electric. He Is concerned for the future of Empire Electric and feels he can offer and Colorado-Uthelp as a Director. e, EMPIRE ELECTRIC ASSOCIATION, INC. 565-444- 4 Steven J. Guymon has submitted his petition to be entered on the ballot for election to the Empire Electric Board of Directors representing District 8 (east CortezLakevlew areas). Mr. Guymon has been a resident of Cortez for over 17 years, moving here In 1972 from Salt Lake City, Utah, where he was bom and raised. He attended the University of Utah and received his Bachelor's degree in Accounting. He and his wife Nadine have four children, Jamie. Wendy, Paul and Leslie. Mr. Guymon worked as Cortez City Clerk In 1972. In 1973. he entered public accounting with Gale W. Greenlee. C.PA., and worked as a junior and senior accountant through 1979. He then worked four years as Senior Staff Accountant with Hutchison. Huglns and Philips. C.P.A.'s. From 1984-8- 6, charge he was Vice-Preside- nt of Finance with in Intercell Corporation of Cortez, and in 1987 he joined forces with Susan A. Kuenzler to form Kuenzler and Guymon, P.C. Mr. Guymon feels it is time to become involved in the community, and feels he can serve best on the Board at Empire Electric. He believes his background in accounting will be an asset to Empire Electric and will enable him to better understand the Colorado-Ut- e problem. Steve says he would like to make sure all avenues are explored to correct the Colorado-Ut- e situation before any rate increases are considered. committees will be asked to assist with the review by helping develop criteria which can be used to make recommendations about each road, trail, or area on the district and then using that criteria to decide the future use for each road, trail or area. Serving on a committee would require attendance at five or six meetings in the next seven or eight months to complete the review. Meetings would be spent looking at roads, trails, and areas on maps and trying to determine future use. One or two field trips may be necessary. Persons interested in being considered to serve on a committee in their area can inform the Forest Service at the meeting, or notify the local District Ranger office, as listed above.
