Utah Power encourages teachers, students to learn electrical safety Reading, writing and math- all basics of elementary and middle school education programs offered in schools. How about the science of electricity and electrical safety? Thanks to Utah Power, this life-saving subject sub-ject is available in elementary and middle school classrooms across its six-state service serv-ice area. Annually since 1996, Utah Power reinforces rein-forces its commitment to electrical safety education by offering through the mail a specialized curriculum to the 1,231 elementary elemen-tary and middle schools across its service area. The curriculum includes information on how electricity works and how to live, work and play safely around it. Grade-specific booklets and an interactive CD-ROM are part of the educational package. Utah Power will send this information, including a mail-in order card, to first, third and fifth-grade fifth-grade elementary school teachers and math and science middle school teachers now through mid-November. "Our commitment to the public's safety begins in schools. What better group to reach first than young people, who are eager to learn and easily retain this valuable valu-able and life-saving information?" said Amy Eschete, Utah Power public safety manager. manag-er. "We hope that schoolchildren will take into their homes what they've learned and educate their parents, siblings and friends about how to be safe around power lines and electricity." Last school year, 74 percent of schools in Utah Power's service area requested educational educa-tional materials. More than 3,700 teachers responded to the utility's offer of free materials mate-rials to use educating more than 111,000 students. Utah Power also offers additional elements to enhance classroom learning. The utility provides safety presentations using high-voltage demonstration boards. These presentations show why birds can safely walk on wires, the dangers of kite flying fly-ing around power lines, how ladders can be hazards in home improvement projects and other scenarios involving electricity. Last year, 786 presentations were given to students stu-dents in schools across the utility's service area, reaching nearly 22,000 students. An electric safety curriculum with grade-specific grade-specific activities, safety tips and an interactive inter-active safety quiz are easily accessible online at www.pacificpower.net. Educators interested in scheduling a safety presentation presenta-tion for their classrooms should call 1-800-375-7085.
