Such was the problem for Timpanogos on Friday against Mountain View. On the offense's first play from scrimmage, quarterback quarter-back Paul Kruger threw a 41-yard touchdown touch-down strike to Jace Bramwell and from there, the T-wolves were rolling, on their way to a 40-5 Region VII victory. "Offensively, we needed to move the ball, we needed to control the ball and, to be honest, hon-est, we didn't get a very good chance to establish estab-lish an offense because we just kept hitting such big plays," said head coach Darren DeGracie. And that first play was just one of many big plays the Timberwolves (1-1, 4-3) would get during the night. Two plays later, it'd be the defense coming up big. After a sack for an 8-yard loss to push Mountain View (0-2, 0-7) back to its own 12, the Timpanogos defense was able to force a fumble down near the goal line. Coming up with the ball in the end zone was T-wolf Brandon TiaTia, who scored the touchdown to help Timpanogos to the 14-0 14-0 lead. At the end of the first quarter and into the second, Timpanogos would use a couple more big plays for another score. A 28-yard pass to Thor Pili moved the T-wolves into Bruin territory, ter-ritory, then a 31 -yard pass to Bramwell at the 3 set up a touchdown plunge by Jerrit Lui. Mountain View wasn't about to back down, though. A 19-yard pass to Brett McDonald would lead to a 45-yard field goal by Brandon Black to put the Bruins on the 4 9 1 1 V. jr. -1 I, -1 , I ' " I II I IV i III Kill "tflf i ft. 1 4 fi 1 J 1 1'; t. i .-'M.i photo hy Landon Olson7mt'.v Newspaper T-wolf Jace Bramwell (28, left) hauls in a pass against Mountain View's James Anderson on Friday. Bramwell finished with three catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns. board at 21-3. In the waning minutes of the half, Mountain View seemed to get going, picking up a safety by Anthony Jenkins and getting the ball back at its own 27. A couple of pass plays moved the ball down the field, but then Brandon Fieldsted came up with the interception inter-ception for Timpanogos. With 44.7 second on the clock, the T-wolves didn't have much time, nor did they need it. On their second play of the drive, Bramwell caught a 44-yard touchdown pass to put Timpanogos up 28-5. "Jace Bramwell has been such a great player for the last two years," DeGracie said. "I hope some college looks at him because he's a winner. Whenever he gets on the field he is flat out going to give you everything he had. That kid has never once gone 98 percent. per-cent. It's always 100 with him." Bramwell gave the credit to Kruger for his passing, though. To start the second half, the Bruins were able to hold Timpanogos, but like happened all night, the T-wolves came up with a big play. With Mountain View attempting a screen pass, defensive tackle Isley Filiaga, read the play, grabbed the interception and rumbled 51 yards down the field for the score. "We've been talking about the screen all week and every time I got past the line pretty pret-ty quick I kind of figured it as going to be screen," Filiaga said. "I was kind of scraping down the line of scrimmage right before he passed, then I was reading where the ball went and I just caught it and ran 51 yards for the touchdown." DeGracie said, "Isley Filiaga is such a great player. If teams don't triple team him, they're crazy. But they can't triple team him because they've got Cam Hill who has been playing out of his mind for the last three weeks, all season actually. That's the nice thing about having two great tackles." Mountain View was able to get through, though, and make a defensive play of its own, blocking the subsequent PAT by Timpanogos. To finish off the game, Timpanogos would make one more drive, stringing together a 28-yard run by Bramwell with a 24-yard touchdown run by Fieldsted to go up 40-5. For the game, Kruger finished 5-of-8 for 148 yards passing while Bramwell had 116 yards receiving. Next up for Timpanogos will be a battle with Lone Peak, a game that could have big implications in the Region with Lone Peak on top at 2-0. After three games on the road, Mountain View will be holding its homecoming, hosting cross-town rival Orem. "'linln ' ' "In " iy. s on its home id .i lev gai-H'S prior. Mountain View repaid the favor, escaping with a 1-0 victory on the road, breaking the Timberwolves eight game win streak, and tying them for the top spot in the region. "We had to win this game because of region implications," said Mountain View head coach Mike Lallargoue. "Timpanogos could have gotten a tie and been OK. We had to come out and play and do some things. I was really happy and proud of the girls." In a game that was dominated by both defenses, the outcome came down to a ! penalty kick in the final minutes although the call was somewhat disputed. In the 34th minute of the second half, Timpanogos was called for a hand ball after a shot deflected off the chest of one of its players, and in the process glanced off a hand. The official made the call in the penalty penal-ty box and granted Mountain View tin kick. "You t.tiiU f' el it was go come clown to a set play either a c u r kick, a free kick or possibly even a penalty kick," Lallargoue said. Timpanogos coach Natalyn Lewis certainly cer-tainly didn't agree with the call, though, saying, "It didn't change the direction of the ball, it didn't change the position of the ball. When the other coach agrees with you, you know it's bad." Despite protest from the Timberwolves' sideline, Bruin Natalie Graham went ahead with the kick, driving a low shot to the far side, past Timpanogos goal keeper Sutton Cherrington. "I was excited because I knew this could either make or break the game," Graham said. "When I was taking it, I just knew what side I was going to. I knew what my shot was going to be, I knew I was going to make it." But until Graham was able to convert! neither team had many opportunities. The ball was generally kept in the midfield as both defenses duked it out, and the Bruin offense was somewhat hindered by the physical play of Timpanogos. Lallargoue said his team is more finesse and a physical game where a referee lets the teams play is probably not to Mountain View's advantage, but despite that he said he was happy with the way his team adjusted. Bruin stopper Deborah Benson said, "We're very finesse. You could tell when we get physical our game isn't that great. We had a lot of bad passes, we had more through balls instead of possession. It did throw our game a little." Not only did the physical play affect the Bruins, but the overall effort by the T-wolves T-wolves helped keep the game balanced. "This is a huge game and I have to give tons of credit to I the T-wolves because they played big," Benson said. "They're young and they came out big and we came out big and we just got the luck." Despite the one call against her team, Lewis said she was happy with her defense and can see some good coming out of the game mainly relieving the pressure to maintain a winning streak. "It relieves that emotional pressure and now we just play," she said. "It could turn out to be a really good thing for us." The regular season for both teams wraps up Thursday, with Timpanogos hosting host-ing Orem and Mountain View hosting Lone Peak. After Mountain View's victory last Thursday, both teams had 5-1 region records and clinched spots in the state tournament. Come See Our New Facility!
