Show Times Newspaper Thursday, October 9, 2003 Page B3 REGION VII TENNIS: OREM TAKES TITLE, QUALIFIES SEVEN ALONG WITH MVHS Brooke Holdaway find Staci Spencer, seeded fourth, defeated Timpanogos' Collette and .Katie Covey to advance to the next round, only to come up against Pleasant Grove's Lauren Francom and Skye Johnson, who went 7-1 during the season. Prior to the match Holdaway had said, despite the seeding, she expected to finish first or second, and she wasn't ahout to disappoint. dis-appoint. Alter dropping the first set to PG, 6-4, 6-4, her and Spencer stunned the Vikings 6-1 in the second set. "I think we just kind of got to them mentally men-tally then they just kind of broke down," Holdaway said. "We won the second set 6-1 and I think that kind of shocked them. It shocked us. I think it shocked everyone." With the momentum, the Bruin duo would go on to win 6-3 in the third set to set up a finals meeting with Orem, which beat defeated Lone Peak. "The great thing about region is that anything any-thing can happen," Holdaway said. The freshman won her third place match in three sets to qualify for state. here ranked fourth and playing first seed PG and upsetting them and beating them, it shows you anything can happen. I just love it." Another big opening day match was played by Timpanogos' Jenny Madsen. Madsen, who hadn't won a match all season, defeated Nikki Bohne, but was then defeated by PC's Madeleine Mahoney. "Jenny Madsen played the match of, I think, her career in her first match, then she came right up against Madeleine Mahoney who's a great little player in our region," Timpanogos coach Suzy Hansgen said. By far the biggest winners of the first day, though, were the Orem Tigers. Winning all their first round matches, the Tigers advanced to the second day of play assured of spots in the state tournament tour-nament as they all found themselves in the championship champi-onship matches. Mountain View's No. 2 singles player Brooke Tenney and No. 1 doubles team were also playing for the top spot, while at the other three spots the Bruins would need wins to advance. In No. 2 singles on Friday, Tenney jumped out to an early lead by taking the first set, but Orem's Ashlee Gardner bounced back to win the second, and after a rain delay that forced the matches to be moved to different locations (Gold's Gym and Alan Ashton's indoor courts), Gardner picked up the third set for the win. "She won the first set so I just knew I had to fight back really hard and be consistent," consis-tent," Gardner said. "She was a really tough player though." The third place match at No. 3 singles saw a rematch of the day before between a pair of freshmen Orem's Kim Bushnell and Timpanogos' Kandace Thomas. Thomas was able to pick the first set 7-6 (7-4) in a tie break, but Bushnell bounced back. She took the second set 6-0 and won the third 6-2 after the rain delay to qualify. "I just didn't want to be the only one not going to state. I just didn't want to be the only one not there," Bushnell said. "My parents par-ents were surprised that I went to state as a freshman. I was surprised. I'm glad I'm going "I was way nervous. Every point was just stress." Mary Dyer Orem No. 1 doubles to state and I was relieved after that." One of the closest and most intense matches of the tournament came in the No. 1 doubles championship. Fresh off their victory over PG, Holdaway and Spencer had some momentum, but they had to face Mary Dyer and Diana Perry of Orem. Dyer and Perry won the first set 6-4, but Mountain View bounced back to take the second sec-ond set 6-3. Then, like the other matches, there was the rain delay. It took nearly an hour for play to resume again and when it did, the Bruin duo took an early lead, but Orem's lead tandem fought back. Mountain View fought to match point with the score 5-4, but a shot by Holdaway sliced just wide, giving Orem a chance. The two teams played neck-and-neck, forcing a tiebreaker 6-6, and with the match on the line, the stress by both teams was obvious as muscles were quivering and the players took time to talk with their partners to calm down. Mountain View jumped out to the quick start in the tiebreaker, but Orem caught up, and when the last ball landed just inches long, Orem had clinched the 8-6 win. "I was way nervous. Every point was just stress," Dyer said. "We just knew we had to keep getting them back and keep putting them away, and we did it." In the final match of the day, Mountain View's Jessica Nielson and Dani Whittaker defeated PG's Brooke Rickenbach and Lauren Roderick in the No. 2 doubles third place match to secure their spot at state with the rest of the team. Because everyone was in a position to qualify, Bruin head coach Lisel Robert said it provided some extra motivation. "When there's a chance you can all go, it really motivates the whole team," Robert said. "They don't want to be the only one not going. It was kind of a motivating factor for all of them to know that there was a chance we could all go up together as a team. They were just really excited for each other and themselves." The state 4A tournament begins Friday and the Region VII qualifiers will face off against Region rV in the first round. With i : rr ' Ml 1 -. . " . j'l --o-M.mir!tf? V ; v . . , -l; . "I think our team this year is just really unified and I think that we all play together and support each other," Holdaway said. "I want it for them as much as they want it for me, as much as we want it for ourselves." Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday and two rounds will be played that day. The final two rounds, including the championship matches, will be played Saturday.
