Theyre not just here to be on a team from Bear River, theyre here to play some hardnosed football. Refuge Manager Lloyd Gunther announced this week. The Fish and Wildlife service has now increased the number of federal test areas this year to 26, ten more than last year. The service also has announced plans to ban the use of lead shot in the entire Atlantic flyway in 1976, in the Mississippi flyway in 1977 and selected areas of the Central and Pacific Flyways in 1978. On Even Days At the local refuge (those entering by way of refuge headquarters) steel shot will be required on all days beginning Oct. 6. On opening day, Oct. 5, hunters will be permitted to use lead shot and all odd numbered days thereafter. Steel shot will only. be available in The price of the shells has not been announced pending bid prices from the ammunition manufacturers. even-number- Gunther said there are no restrictions on the use of lead shot in Area B. Area B is that area reached by way of the Perry entrance gate. For those hunting this area a new concrete boat launching ramp has recently been completed. Hunters Resisted Although hunter success is not significiantly different in using steel shot, hunter resistance was quite evident last year, Gunther said. Lead shot days received by far the heaviest use. Part of this resistance to use of steel shot is due to the higher price for shells which last year sold for $4 per box. Waterfowl populations are expected to be similar to last year. At the Bear River refuge the water situation has been good with an ample food supply for the fall migrants. Anyone wishing to launch boats to inspect the hunting areas or set up blinds may do so starting Saturday, Sept. 28, Gunther said.
