Show Springville Fire Burns FourStores Fire that for a time threatened to destroy the entire business section of Springville, Friday night burned burn-ed four business houses to the ground and partially damaged sev-jeral sev-jeral others. The entire loss of the j fire is estimated at about $'20,000. .The buildings totally destroyed were the Campbell Pharmacy, the City lorug store, the Independent printing print-ing shop, and the Teasdale shoe repair re-pair shop. A granary belonging to the H. T. Reynolds company also was destroyed with 300 bushels of wheat. An automobile belonging to Jack Campbell nnd a delivery truck of the Reynold's company also were ruined by the flames. I Slight damage was done to the Whlttaker barber shop, the Perry & BeaVdall barber shop, the New Cafe operated by Hoffhein & Crawford, Craw-ford, and Ike Brown and Neilson meat market. The Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Tele-phone company sustained losses to the amount of from '00 to $1200 when the flames deKroyeeL the company com-pany cable and a great deal of wir-ing. wir-ing. The Springville Light company also sustained a loss of approximately approxi-mately $1000 through the burning of several poles and crossarms as well as wiring. The fire started about 7 :00 o'clock Friday evening in a pile of rubbish back of the Campbell Pharmacy. The flames soon spread to Mr. Campbell's touring car and when the gasoline tank exploded the flames soon scattered to the building. build-ing. In less than ten minutes from the beginning of the lire the roofs of four of the buildings were aflame. The strong wind blowing at the time sent burning fragments of wood for long distances along the street, many of them lighting on the roofs of other buildings. Several tons of baled hay piled near the Reynolds grain bins were destroyed by the flames. The flames shot into the air 30 feet and across Main street. The trains of the Salt Lake & Utah railroad rail-road were held up for more than three hours on account of the fire. The Provo and the Spanish Fork fire departments assisted the Springville fire department in j fighting the flames. Six lines were! extended from pumpers and two! from fire hydrants. Until after the ; three departments had combined their efforts, the fire steadily increased in-creased in force. When it became apparent that the wooden buildings on the block could not be saved, the fire departments concentrated their effort to save the large three-story building of the Reynolds company. Joseph Robison, a member of the Spanish Fork fire department, sustained sus-tained injuries to his arm as he fell through the roof of one of the buildings. The fire was not under control until after 8:30 o'clock, at which time the four buildings had burned to the ground, only the side brick walls of the City Drug store remaining re-maining standing. |
