Francisco Saverio Nitti, former minister of agriculture agri-culture and industry and commerce and economic head of the Italian war mission, mis-sion, said today that the mission had come, not to seek anything for Italy specifically, but to draw more closely together the two great nations and assure as-sure an allied victory. "There is only one great question today, to-day, and that ia whether German militarism mili-tarism or allied democracy shall survive' sur-vive' he said. "If Germany wins this war her oligarchy will destroy the world. This docs not mean the crushing crush-ing of the German nation, but rather such a military defeat as to discredit absolutely Germany's military caste. "Italy did not enter the war for any particular interest. She could easily eas-ily have stayed out on the basis of her treaty with Germany. The threat of world combination under the menace of the mailed fist made such a course impossible. im-possible. This is Italy's last war of independence. It gives her opportunity opportu-nity to rectify her boundaries and to win back her lost provinces. "Germany and Austria know they are beaten. The last hope is in the submarine or in dissension amongst the allies. She is using both to the full limit. It is essential for us all to hold together, in the common cause." Mr. Nitti declared Italy 's general economic situation splendid and that he expected her to emerge from the war one of the strongest industrial nations of the world. |
