H( Go to Bed and Stay Quiet H Take a Laxative Eat Plenty H of Nourishing Food Keep Hll; Up Your Strength Nature is the Only "Cure." Hj ALWAYS CALL A DOCTOR NO OCCASION FOR PANIC. Hjj ' Spanish influenza, which appeared in Hj Spain in May, has all the appearance H of grip or la grippe, which has swept jt over the world in numerous epidemics Hf as far back as history runs. Hippoc- Hf jates refers to an epidemic in 412 B. H JC., which is regarded by many to have i i ncen InflUenza. Every century has had H its attacks. Beginning with 1S31, this Hj country has had five epidemics, the last in 1889-90. Hfi ; There is no occasion for panic In- H! -fluenza Itself has a very low percent- H ge of fatalities not over orit; -dq.it h b out of every four hundred cases, ac- 4 cording to the N. C, Board of Health. I The chief danger lies in complications (i arising, attacking principally patients 1 J Tna run down condition those who j don't go to bed soon enough, or those M . who get up too early. 5 THE SYMPTOMS. B f Grip, or influenza, as it is now called, usually begins with a chill, followed 1 by aching, feverishness and sometimes H j nausea and dizziness, and a general W I feeling of weakness and depression. 1 Tho temperature is from 100 to 104 Bj and the fever usually lasts from three to five days. The germs attack the U mucous membrane, or lining of the air Hj passages nose, throat and bronchial Hj tubes there is usually a hard cough, W especially bad at night, often times B a sore throat or tonsilitis, and fro- H$ head cold. Hf THE TREATMENT. Hj Go to bed at the first symptoms, not j only for your own sake, hut to avoid H spreading the disease to others take K purgative, eat plenty of nourishing H toad, remain perfectly quiet and don't B worry. Quinine. Aspirin or Dover's Hj Powder, etc., may be administered by H the physician's directions to relieve H the aching. But there Is no cure or H specific for influenza the disease jjj must run Its course. Nature herself Hjjj 'iH throw off tho nttack if only you Hgjf keep up your strength. The chief dan- H ger, lies in the complications which HEs av arlse- Influenza so weakens tha Hj bodily resistance that there is danger H of pneumonia or bronchitis develop- K Ing, and sometimes inflammation of H the middle ear, or heart affections. For H these reasons, it is verj- important that H the patient remain in bed until his H Btrength returns stay in bed at least B two days or more after the fever has j left you,' or if you are over 50 or not Hf Jong, stay in bed four days or more, according to the severitv of the attack. at-tack. EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS. In order to stimulate the lining of the air passages to throw off the grip germs, to aid in loosening the phlegm and keeping the air passages open, thus making the breathing easier, Vick's VapoBub will bo found effective. effec-tive. Hot, wet towels should be applied over the throat, chest and back between be-tween the shoulder blades to open the pores. Then Vapo-Hub should be rubbed rub-bed In over the parts until the skin is red, spread on thickly and covered with two thicknesses of hot flannel cloths. Leave the clothing loose around the neck as the heat of the body liberates the ingredients in the form of vapors. These vapors, inhaled with each breath, carry the medlca-tion medlca-tion directly to the parts affected. At the same time, VapoRub is absorbed through and stimulates the skin, attracting at-tracting the blood to the surface, and thus aids in relieving the congestion within. HOW TO AVOID THE DISEASE. Evidence seems to prove that this is a germ disease, spread principally bv human contact chiefly through cough ing, sneezing or spitting. So avoid persons per-sons having colds which means avoiding avoid-ing crowds common drinking cups, roller towels, etc. Keep up vour bodily strength by plenty of exercise in the open air, and good food. fEEP FREE. FROM COLDS. Above all, keep free from colds, as colds irritate tho lining of the air passages pas-sages and render them much better breeding places for the germs. Use Vicks VapoRub at the very first sign of a cold. For a head cold, melt a little VapoRub In a spoon and inhale the vapors, or better still, use VapoRub In a benzoin steam kettle. If this is not available, use an ordinary tea-kettle ru null iuji oi Douing water, put in half a teaspoon of VapoRub from time to time keep the kettle just slowly boiling anU inhale the steam arising NOTE: Vick's VapoRub Is the discovery dis-covery of a North Carolina druggist, who found how to combine, in salve form, Menthol and Camphor with such volatile oils as Eucalyptus, Thyme, Cubebs, etc., so that when the salve is applied to tho body heat, these ingredients ingre-dients are liberated In the form of vapors. Vapo-Rub is comparatively new In New York stale and New England and a few western states, where it is just now being introduced, but in other sections sec-tions of the country It is the standard home remedy in more than a million homes for all forms of cold troubles Over six million jars were sold last year. It Is particularly recommended for children's croup or colds, since it is externally applied and therefore can be used as freely as desired without tho slightest harmful effects. VapoRub Vapo-Rub can be had in three sizes at all druggists. Advertisement.
