'' s ' 1 -f - y" f" ? cv Duiing the 1890s. Parkites celebrat ed the Fourth of July with a parade, an pfternoon baseball game, foot racds and other contests and often a Grand ball in the evening. But in 1898, absolutely nothing was done. "Out of the Ashes" read a heading in llhe July 2 Park Record. Less thai two weeks earlier the city's disastrous dis-astrous 1898 fire had leveled more than half the town, including many hoi ics and almost all of Main Strti t;t below Fourth Street. ii June of the following year, woi ld-be organizers canceled the Foi rth of July celebration when few attended their initial meetings. Lac i of funds deterred the business con munity. But Parkites' patriotic spir t would not be put down. By July 1, the Park City Military Band was deep in plans for a parade and oth r celebratory activities. It was too late to schedule the cityfc baseball base-ball teams, and at best there would be 5nly one merchant float. The paride featured Miss Mamie Hui ley as the Goddess of Liberty, and her 13 handsome attendants, whej represented the original states. Bismarck Snyder in his Spanish-American Spanish-American War uniform from Manilla, and Dan Shields in his Serjeant uniform from Torrey's Rough Riders were marshals. Among 1899s celebrations was a Fourth of July Pageant that featured fea-tured Carrie Jensen. When she posed with the flag, above, she was justishort of her 14th birthday. Carrie Alberta Jensen, or Bertie, as her family called her, was bork to the Julius Jensens in 1885. iiul A ( ., I f V. if f i) ii COURTESY OF THE ANDREW J. Her mother, Lovinia Jenlen. sent her to St. Mary's Catiolic School, where the sisters were good to her. The next year Carrie returned to public school and j things were better. "When I was n sixth grade, I was perfect in spelling for the year, and received a book from the principal of schools at the Park Opera House during the commencement exercises," exer-cises," Carrie Jensen Chamberlain recalled. Carrie also took part in class plays and debates and became an excellent pianist. She played at commencement exercis es and at concerts and programs put on by various organizations. "When I was between 10 and 12, 1 was quite chubby. At school I took part in a play as Martha Washington, and Harry Scott was George. After that, he called me 'Pudgy' all through high school." Be that as it may, Carrie was prominent in a Fourth of July Pageant in 1899, and photographed pho-tographed very nicely.
