According to Utah Highway Patrol officials. Gregorio Hernandez. 43, of Hialeah, Fla., and 7-year-old Rafael Cruz, of Waterbury. Conn, were killed. Four other passengers injured in the crash, include 28-year-old Aida Padilla, of Waterbury, Conn., Waterbury resident Lydia Cruz, 10. Joseph Ortiz, 6, of Waterbury, and 45-year-old Ana Maria Prado. "The 6 year old was in stable condition when we went to check on them and the 10-year-old girl was in serious condition," Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Shawn Judd said Monday. The patients were airlifted Sunday to area hospitals - the two women, in serious condition, Judd adds. "There was a problem with the brakes on the vehicle," Judd said. "We know that the steering was working and Hernandez deliberately deliber-ately steered off the road ... and then crossed over that road that leads to Mountain Dell Reservoir." "The truck went up the side of the mountain until it stopped and then it' rolled down, back into the emergency lane of westbound I-80." I-80." Westbound lanes in Parleys Canyon were closed while three helicopters landed to pick up the victims and troopers cleaned up debris. "The truck left Miami and was in route to Sparks, Nevada, loaded with vitamins, supplements, stuff like that," Judd said. No other motorists reported damage as a result of the crash, he said. "There were people ejected from the vehicle. It ranged from the little 7-year-old boy who was dead ... to other people that were outside of the vehicle and emergency emer-gency respondcrs were still trying to render aid to," Judd said, adding that Hernandez's body was pinned in the cab of the truck. According to troopers, only Hernandez and Padilla were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. "We're still trying to determine where everyone was seated." Judd said, adding that the cab of the truck had a sleeping area. The two deceased likely died from head injuries, he said. "It was just kind of surprising for everybody to see that there were six people inside this commercial com-mercial vehicle." Judd said, about the group of friends and relatives. "It's not normally what you see." The truck reportedly broke into pieces. "There was an axle from the trailer that was still up on the side of the mountain ... it came off in the process of the truck rolling down the hillside," Judd said. He did not blame excessive speed for the crash. "Hernandez was going freeway free-way speeds and then at times he was passing other cars that were traveling the posted speed limit." Judd said, about witness accounts. Eastbound lanes were not affected by the crash, however. Judd said many motorists stopped to watch and offer help. "What we didn't want to have is another crash occur on the eastbound side because of all the traffic slopping in the travel lanes," -he said. "We had registered regis-tered nurses and an off-duty paramedic." Emergency crews were still cleaning up wreckage Sunday night. " The recovery of the vehicle and all the contents - it takes an extremely long time," Judd said, adding that Hernandez was employed as a driver with a Miami freight company. Suede demands equality in county J5 f 1 4 GRAYSON WESTR4RK RECORD The owners of Suede, a nightclub at Kimball Junction, claim that their business has been unfairly regulated by Summit County. Eric Oldham, Tara Cinelli and Jodey Fey addressed the Summit County Commission on June 23 about several concerns they have regarding signage and parking at their club. Cinelli claims that as a nightclub selling alcohol, Suede is forced to undergo more stringent code requirements than surrounding businesses. "My main goal here is an even playing field for Suede," Cinelli said. However, Commissioner Bob Richer said Suede is the only nightclub in the Snyderville Basin. "You have occupancy occupan-cy issues, you have police issues, you have fire issues," Richer told Cinelli. Inside and on the outside balcony (pictured here) Suede has a maximum occupancy of 819 people.
