St. Mary's college, widen lias been closed for over a year by order of Bishop McCloskey, was re-opened today. to-day. In accordance with the directions of the prelate St. Joseph's college at Bardstown, one of the best kovvn Catholic Cath-olic institutions of learning iu the sotuh, remained closed. St. Mary's was founded iu 18il, and has been conducted for some years bythe Congregations of the Resurrection. Years ago there was a verbal agreement agree-ment between Bishop McCloskey and tho brothers of the Resurrection that thuro should be no other general school iu the diocese until St. Mary's was in a prosperous condition. When St. Joseph's was made a general school in IN?:) this tacit agreement was broken. At lirst the faculty at St. Mary's did not object, but the attendance fell off and the cd-lego cd-lego did not prosper. Two years ago the president of St. Mary's asked the bishop to close St. Joseph's hut the bishop refused, and then tho president closed St. Mary's. 'J'he arrangement by. which St. Mary's now opens and St. Joseph's remains' closed was entered into last spring by the bishop and the brothers of the Resurrection. |
