Show The Liberty Motor America's Contribution J i The Tribune is indebted to Motor Age for tne exceptional photo with mechanical cross sections of the great Liberty motor, the gift of American inventive genius and transcendent me- S V chauicai skill, to mankind. i Lieutenant H. H. Emmons, chief of the engine production department of the war production board, says of the Liberty engine that it is a distinctive American type, admirably adapted to ; American methods of manufacture. j The photo herewith is a close-np view of the motor about which millions of pages of copy have been written. It is the engine that develops 1 horse yower and more for every 2 pounds 01 j weight. As the engine weighs approximately 800 pounds, it therefore develops between 400 and 450 horsepower. t s ': It is the premier motor of the age, and the one engine with which all American combat planes were and are equipped. The allies were quick to recognize the superiority, of the Liberty motor and took hundreds, of them for their planes. The Liberty motor may be said to be composite in design to the extent that it is the development of the ideas of the best automotive en- I ; I gineering minds of the United "States. j FTa of liberty engine IpSSiJ " C3 . For some time those connected with the Indianapolis track have been almost constantly asked if there is to be a revival of the annual speedway classic. Not until Fisher's wire caine across was anyone in Ksition to say definitely just what trend developments would take. Tho decision, it is thought, was greatly great-ly influenced by the informal assurance that, a 500-mile"raco at the Indianapolis motor speedway next M ay could be. made an international event in the true sense of the word. It is a remarkable coincidence that most of the countries represented in the five former oUO-mile races at Indianapolis arc today listed among America's allies, and an international interna-tional sweepstakes, in which France, England, Belgium and Italy participated partici-pated with America at Indianapolis, would be the greatest event in all gaso- , line history. While the authorities connected with the Indianapolis track are non-committal, it is believed that every effort will be made to remobilize the great aviators avia-tors of war, such men as Acc Eddie Kickenbacker, Caleb Bragg, Ralph De Palma, et al., and welcome them back into the great game with the old traditional tradi-tional and spectacular starting bomb. Anvway here's how. Welcoie back, automobile racing. Gee but it sounds like old times! |
