Picked 5-- le Christensen, second baseman Gaylen Evans, third baseman Trov Peterson, centerfielder Scott Mike Wilberger, rightfielder Brown, pitcher Brad Wood, third baseman and outfielder Ron Taggart and pitcher, outfielder, by many area coaches as the team to beat again in Region Three baseball, Taylorsville high opened varsity play Tuesday with an home win over a good exciting Hillcrest squad, Mike Brown driving in Scott Peterson in the bottom of the seventh. Tomorrow (Friday) the Warriors will host Brighton in a 3:30 p.m. On the following Monday, they will open the Granite District Tournament at Bountiful at 3:30. Tourney action continues on March 29 and 30. In Tuesdays game, Peterson had two hits and Troy Woolley two, including a second inning home run. Coach Ron Rushton has selected a squad consisting of 11 seniors, five juniors and nine sophomores for 1988 and theres a number of returning standouts to bolster the Warriors chances. Included in that group are senior Scott Peterson and Kevin Quinn, Peterson at catcher and Quinn at pitcher. Other seniors are first baseman Steve Woolley, infielder Chad 4 first baseman Shane Johanson. Top juniors were listed as lefifielder Mark Sampson, pitcher outfielder Barr Hill, pitcher third baseman Jeff Leatherwood, second baseman Shane Lyon and Guy Mackay to go with sophomores Nick Deluca at short and Justin Stanley at catcher and outfield. "Weve got a pretty good group of seniors, who saw a lot of commented time,'' playing Rushton, "and wholl provide with good leadership. Were looking forward to the season and feel well be representative." Though just about everybody else is picking the Warriors to again be the team to beat in Region Three, Rushton thinks that Granger and Skyline are two squads to watch and that Kearns and Cyprus should be good as catcher-outfield- squad and Cyprus will be joining forces with some teams from WEST VALLEY.
