Anna Mary Robertson (Grandma Moses), who v. as bom in 1860, and Daisy Fi ier, who was bom July 9, 1905 in Comanche County, Texas, have something in common - they both started painting well after their 70 th year. Grandma Moses took up the brush at age 76, when her arthritic hands no longer allower her to embroider pictures on canvas, and although she had never had an art lesson she became one of Americas most famous primitive painters with a career that extended right up to her death in 1961. In the case of Daisy Frier, her artistic career began at age 83, and she hopes to extend it even longer than her older counterpart did, because right now she is having the time of her life painting landscapes at the Magna Senior Citizen Center. Like Grandma Moses, Daisy also has arthritis, however she also suffers from diabetes, hypertension and Parkinsons disease. But this little human know ' the doesnt dynamo meaning of the word quit, and she never gives up in her quest to get the most out of life. In spite of the tremors that are part of the Parkinsons disease, Daisy refuses to ride the bus from home to the center, and walks the 2 & 12 blocks that separate the two, three days a week. In she addition also actively participates in the exercise classes there. She attributes her tenacity to having been raised on a cotton farm in Texas, where she was the oldest of 10 children, and having to milk five cows before school. "We all had our jobs to do. There wasnt such a thing as welfare, so we just got in there and dug to survive," she said. As she became an adult her life wasnt a whole lot easier either, because after she married John Marcus Frier in Walters, Okla. in November of 1932, they had to go where the work was. Her first child was born in Price, Utah, in 1934 and her youngest in Knox City, Texas, in 1939. In between her husband worked ir the asphalt pits at Price, the L river King Mine in Park City, as well as at Bingham. They ended up in Magna in 1954 where her husband worked in the car shop at Kennecott. A widow for the past four years, Daisy also lost her youngest daughter when she died in childbirth. As far as her art is concerned, Daisy says that she likes the first one she did more than any of the others she has done since. "I do better on small canvasses," she said, "because it requires more concentration and I can control the tremors better." However, she frankly admits that she loves to do crafts, almost as much as she does art, and she still does all her own housework in spite of her disabilities. "You cant sit down in a chair and feel sorry for yourself when life deals you the wrong cards," Daisy said. "Youve got to get out and keep stirring around if you intend to go on living.
