Show Wtdntdiy, Fbwvy 18, 1987 LBTTCRG Be morally responsible Editor. You, Erik Christiansen, an assistant editorial editor? Ha! You're not an editorial writer. A true editorial writer is not afraid to present his personal stance and viewpoint in a moral debate. He doesn't hide behind ad ho mine m attacks directed at certain organizations in a petty attempt to avoid comment on the truly crucial issues divestment and moral responsibility. You're only an ineffectual rhetoric spewer! As for your assertion that the campus groups have been beaten, you are wrong. It is the reputation of the University of Utah that has suffered the greatest loss in this battle. Any person who has the slightest inkling of what constitutes a display of ethical coherence will undoubtedly sec this university's lucid bigotry and its reluctance to do the least that it can in the name of morality. last year, for example, students with undergraduate degrees in English from the University of Utah have been employed as regional sales representatives for major New York publishing firms, technical writers ith local corporations, interns in hotel management with an international hotel chain, writers for a local television station, teachers in Utah's schools and in other and financially stable job situations. Quite simply, it is time to lay to rest the myth of the impoverished English graduate who must spend long hours scrubbing floors as punishment for studying what he or she loved and did best. well-respect- ed pro-divestm- Director undergraduate English studies Editor I wish to applaud the efforts of University of Utah Students Against Apartheid. Racism is a vile disease that has no place in a civilized world. Attention needs to be focused on the government of South Africa. Its policy of apartheid is an indelible stain on all society. Its policy of detention without trial of adults isabhorent. Its detention without trial of thousands of children is racial madness. Perpetuation of the status quo in South Africa cannot be tolerated by Americans. Civil rights are everyone's business. James M. The article who wins the BYU-Uta- h rivalry and further went on to say I wish I could be attending BYU instead of Utah. These are not my beliefs. As a member of the team (although I'm only a rcdshirt freshman), I feel as much emotion in a game as the players do. I do feel bad when the team loses, and I am happy when the team wins. It is a joke to say I would be indifferent to the victory of either team. As to the assertion I wish I could play for BYU someday, I have no fantasies of wearing a blue uniform in a BYU-Uta- h rivalry. I am glad to be here, and I am proud to be a member of the University of Utah basketball team. Y. VThat is this fear of liberals by conservatives? They carry the banners of God, nationalism and the "American Way" as true and righteous, while the banners of justice, freedom and humanity burn in a heap of discarded values set aflame by apathy and ignorance. Those w ho would pull the burning banners from the flames are accused of wide-eye- d and unsophisticated idealism." In American history, the tradition of liberal activism has initiated many of the freedoms our society enjoys today. These include freedoms and benefits that some may take for Write A Letter To The Editor, 240 Union Building "quasi-communisti- c, granted: women's voting rights; Social Security; unemployment benefits; welfare and educational benefits; and black voting rights. The belief that English majors find it impossible to find meaningful employment after graduation may have been true 20 or 25 years ago, but it simply is not the case today.
