It all started with the medieval court jester. Originally clowns did not wear makeup. That was an innovation of a French clown called Pierrot (Little Peter) who developed the white face that is so familiar today. Gerry Cohn, who is his assistant, said she did not notice clowns when she was little. She got into clowning by dressing up for the birthday party of a friend's son. She liked it so she did it for other parties. She says she was "a lipstick clown" literally smearing lipstick on her face as makeup.
