It all started with the medieval court jester. Originally clowns did not wear makeup. That was an innovation of a French clown called Pierrot (Little Peter) who developed the white face that is so familiar today. She liked it so she did it for other parties. She says she was "a lipstick clown" literally smearing lipstick on her face as makeup.
