Show TUTTLE STORE LuST u b:g mahti fire At i a. m. Tuesday morn.ng Manti was awakened by the cry of fire and it was found that the Tuttle store was on fire. Li a few minutes there was a large crowd of people and, with the attaching at-taching of the hose hydrant and a buck- et brigade all worked hard and confined i to the one builui.ig ai d in course of a- bout one hour the fire was extinguished ! but not until about three-fourths of the goods were burned and baily damaged and rendered almost worthless. Tne origin of the fire is beiieved to be incendiary, in-cendiary, and it is thought that during ! the fire, and at least during the same ; night, the County Court house was ; broken into and the safe or vauit was i broken open and some valuables des- troyed. The safe crackers, though, made a mistake. They got into the j wiong safe whicn contained the rec-.rds , only and not the one that had the cash ; in, so they got almost nothing for their trouble. It is strongly believed that those safe crackers were the ones that ! Btarted the fire in the Tuttle store, so that during the excitement they could , perform this other work injthe County ; Court house. The captal stock of the : T'.utle store was about $30,000 and it ' only carried about $12,000 insurance, so that the loss will be about twelve or j fourteen thousand dollars on the goods and several hundred on the building as j the entire of the building was badly j burned and damaged by water, practic i ally leaving but the walls. The damaged i goods have been placed in the building awaiting the arrival of the insurance adjuster. There was quite a lively time during the fire in the ad;oiniiig building. build-ing. In the Stringham harness shop he cleared everything out and piled it up in the street, and they had got some things out of the Crawfrrd drug store and were watching closely to see what the fire was doing, expecting every mo-j mo-j ment to clear out his place, but the i fire was extinguished before it reached I him, saving him the trouble. It was j quite a sight to see the street covered with ail kinds of goods from a straw hat to a $50. 00 set of harness. A. Anderson |
