Show Affidavit Should Go With This. A certain special correspondent for a New York newspaper was sent on the double quick a few years ago to get a "descriptive story" of a serious mine disaster which had occurred in the Pennsylvania coal fields. More than 200 miners had been entombed and rescuing parties were vainly attempting at-tempting to reach them. Arriving at the scene of the disaster the correspondent corre-spondent stood drinking in the situation. situa-tion. The weeping relatives gathered at the head of the shaft and the spiritual spir-itual consolation which was being given them by clergymen affected him strongly. Rushing back to the telegraph tele-graph office he wrote a 1,500-word "lead," which started like this: "God Is near the head of the Mt. Pleasant shaft tonight. Hundreds of wives, mothers, sweethearts and sisters sis-ters are praying for the rescue of their loved ones." An hour after the story was filed he was somewhat startled to receive this telegram from his managing editor: ed-itor: "Drop disaster. Get good interview with God; 3,000 words." Baltimore American. |
