The image of university students hand- cuffed, slammed against the wall, sur- rounded by a bunch of gun-toticops, is a very disturbing one. Had the student been a ng I find all the ASUU political parties, except for the Who Cares? Party, obscene. notorious drug dealer, or an escaped Brett R. Quaney Junior civil engineering such a brutal manner. Despite University of Utah Police Chief Indian massacre was, still is crime Editor: I take issue with Brigham Madsen's quote in the article, "Massacre at Bear River . . ." (Feb. 4) that, "You can't judge him (Connor) by today's standards. He was an Indian fighter and a good one." Madsen is speaking of Col. Patrick Connor who, with his troops, slaughtered many Shoshone men, women and children at their traditional winter campground. This monstrous crime had the approval of the Mormon farmers in that area. What the soldiers did was considered a crime then and is considered a crime today, according to Christian principles and moral standards,,.. I am convinced that in the years to come, massacres of that nature will still be considered crimes. Since I am a Shoshone, it is impossible for me to look at crimes against my people dispassionately. Beverly Crum Research associate anthropology Police force at U. needs assessing convict, we could see the justification for sending so large a force and for acting in Wayne Shepherd's protests to the contrary, and despite whether the student had refused to accept an eviction served by residence hall administrators, this was excessive force. Shepherd claimed the extra officers were needed to control the crowd in case it got out of hand. By sending so many men, he guaranteed the situation would get out of hand. This incident calls into question the justification for keeping such a police force on campus. Before the turbulent 1960s, the university was policed by an unarmed constable and the Salt Lake City police Party's tactics are obviously unfair Editor: Let me start by stating that I am writing on behalf of myself and no one political party whatsoever. I am writing because lam pissed off at a particular party with a lame attitude. This party (let us call it X) thinks it is pretty sly. Never mind that it is allowed to spend just as much on campaigning in less than a week as others may in a month or more. Forget about the meaning of fair play or ethics. These words are much too hard for the X Party to comprehend. These people are hard-nose- d and want to win in any way If possible. they could buy your votes, they probably would. X Party will do almost anything to win. They will put cute ads in the newspaper and learn from all the mistakes other parties have made. They think they will have an edge over others. I want to say a few small things to these clever people. You are not clever. You are not even amusing. You give yourselves a lot of credit and none to the intelligence of others. This is a university, not a county fair. I am confident that many other students feel the same way. We can see right through your cute tricks. Do you really think that someone will actually believe you forgot to file on time or that you decided to run on Monday? All of your X's do not even add up to a real number. I think the X Party not only missed the clue bus, but it doesn't even know where the bus stop is. Sorry guys, I don't think this year is the year of the X. As a result of nationwide campus disturbances culminating in the DOMINO'S PIZZA ' A QUARTER WILL GET YOU riots following the killing of four students at Kent State University in May 1970, the university jumped on the "law and order" bandwagon. Now think back on your time here at the University of Utah. Do you remember ever hearing of a stolen bicycle or backpack returned, or a library flasher apprehended as a result of the efforts of the campus police? Have they ever caught anyone breaking into students' cars? Or do you remember, as we do, the narcs slinking around campus, the officers taking pictures of animal rights protesters' cars, off campus, the traffic tickets given by rude university cops in mirrored sunglasses? It's time President Peterson and the U. administration reviewed the need for having this group of armed storm troopers in our midst.
