It Is cnlled White Island, and consists mainly of sulphur mixed with gypsum nnd a fow other minerals, over tno island, which Is about threo miles In clrcumferenco, nnd rises between 800 nnd 900 foot above the sen, floats continually an immenso cloud of vapor attaining an elovatlon of 10,000 feet. In tho center is a boiling lnko of acid-charged water, wa-ter, covering fifty acres, and surrounded sur-rounded with blow-holes from which steam nnd sulphurous fumes aro emitted emit-ted with great force nnd noise. With enro a boat can bo navigated on tho lnko. The sulphur from Whlto Island Is very pure, but little effort has yet been mado to procuro it systematically. |
