Show Volume XIV Issue XV The Ogden Valley news Page 5 October 15, 2007 Apple Pie, Baseball, and the American Paint Horse Compiled by Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News “American Paint Horse” is the title of Huntsville artist Steve Johnson’s latest creative effort—a 60” x 40” oil on canvas rendering of the wild American paint horse and a new foal. Take a second look and you’ll see that, combined, the two create the imagery of its namesake—America— from the patterns of the horses’ markings. Johnson began developing the piece using charcoal renderings of his creative take on one of the country’s favorite breeds. He completed the piece earlier this year and has received outstanding reviews at art shows elsewhere within the state. The “Paint Horse” is descended from Spanish horses brought over to the Americas by Spanish Conquistadors. Hernando Cortes is said to have brought 16 war horses to the new world, one of which was a sorrel and white pinto. It was that horse that historians believe founded the American paint Horse breed. The breed became a popular horse with the American Indians who used the American Paint Horse as a war horse. American Paint Horses are characterized by their bold markings—irregular and scattered colored patches. Information from the American Paint Horse Association states that descendants of this unusual stallion soon spread across the western plains, and attracted the attention of the American Indian. The flashy looks and hardy conformation of these horses made them the preferred mount for many of the Plains tribes. It is largely due to this favoritism that the Paint Horse prospered, since pinto coloring was considered undesirable by European Americans until well into the 20th Century. Today, it has one of the largest breed registries in the United States. The community will have an opportunity to view Johnson’s striking piece of artwork on October 19 and 20 at an open house that has been slated for both days from noon to 9:00 p.m. at his art studio in Huntsville Town at 7382 E. 100 S. Also available at the open house will be limited editions of newly released geclee’ on canvas and lithographs of “American Paint Horse,” and many other new originals, as well as the much loved and familiar prints, and cards and books portraying Johnson’s artwork. Steve’s heartwarming portrayals of the rural America we all love and remember elicit nostalgic feelings of better days gone by.
