Show New Utah - Thursday, December 30, 2004 - Page 12 Top W stories of 2004 picked for norm wan List reflects variety with violence, growth and community struggles Cathy Allred The North County Newspaper News-paper staff has chosen its top 10 stories for the year. The results are based on those events or issues that most impacted or received much attention from the north Utah County communities. The stories in highest importance are as follows: Cabela's announcement of moving to the area, the Alpine School District division divi-sion process and death of such a division for four more years, a noticeable increase of violence in the workplace including two homicides, the American Fork administrator administra-tor is terminated, the Cedar Hills Golf Course expenses are more than the city has available, a rash of school bomb and gun scares sweep the area, mudslides and flooding hit Cedar Valley and Saratoga Springs, Fairfield incorporates into a town, Cedar Hills turns down Wal-Mart Wal-Mart and The Meadows growth explodes. The announcement of Cabela's building one of its stores in Lehi was the most significant long-reaching event that occurred in north Utah County for 2004. Residents in the Lehi area were passionate about whether or not to divide the Alpine School District. The most vocal were those opposed to the division, and the rest of the residents within the district boundaries bound-aries were silent or seemed to think a division might be a good idea. The issue was killed for the next four years. Violence in the workplace shattered the calm and security secu-rity of many in north Utah County when tragedy struck Pleasant Grove in February. After leaving a disciplinary meeting at the Provo River Water Users Association, Louis Darrell Kinyon of American Fork returned to work with a handgun. Kinyon Kiny-on allegedly shot and killed his newly appointed supervisor, supervi-sor, Kent Neil Griffith of Pleasant Grove. Another workplace shooting shoot-ing ended the life of Prestige Exteriors owner Joseph Crummy, 38, on Jan. 9 in north Lehi. Charges of shooting the Salt Lake City resident were filed against Jesus Hernandez. American , Fork City Council decided at the beginning of the year to terminate ter-minate the long-term city administrator Carl Wanlass. He had held the position since it was created in 1992, and had previously worked for the city as its budget officer. offi-cer. The city ended 2004 with no administrator, because the position's responsibilities responsibili-ties were assigned to two city employees. The City of ( Cedar Hills struggled witA'its new golf course. Not only was it an expensive inyestinent, the investment turned sour. Anticipated rnues did not cover expenses and the city began considering passing pass-ing the cost onjjt'o 'the taxpayer, tax-payer, an estimated $11 per household. Thje 'council will continue to receive public input on the issue in 2005. A rash of bomb .and gun scares in the winter of 2004 kept ASD administrators busy at the schools. Evacuations Evacua-tions and lockdowns were not only practiced this year, but used. The evacuation of Lehi Junior High School because of a bomb threat went smoothly until parents flooded the evacuation site, the nearby high school, to pick up their children. Traffic congestion and frustration in the time-consuming process of checking out a student 1 Cabela's announced 2 Alpine School District division process 3 Violence in the workplace work-place 4 AF administrator terminated 5 Hills Cedar Golf Course 6 Rash of school bomb and gun scares 7 Cedar Valley flooding 8 Fairfield incorporates 9 Cedar Hills turns down Wal-Mart 10 The Meadows growth angered some parents.
