Overtime games are nothing new to high school basketball. However, back-to-back overtime games against the Bulldogs and the Dons put the Vikings in a unique situation. After suffering defeat in heartbreaking fashion against Provo, the Vikings ' were determined not to let it happen again. "We've lost a couple of close games," said Viking coach Glenn Larson. "So, it was nice for us to come out on top in this one. "Our main focus tonight was shutting down Jessica Anderson and Diana Stewart," Stew-art," he continued. "Katie Dixon did a good job on Anderson. Anderson didn't make any more than seven points tonight. She usually averages 17 points a game. We won the game tonight with our defense." The Vikings took advantage advan-tage of an early technical foul on the Dons that turned a Spanish Fork lead into a six-point swing, giving giv-ing Pleasant Grove the 14-11 14-11 advantage. Pleasant Grove was led by Cody Bil-bro's Bil-bro's seven points during the opening quarter. Bilbro has begun to assume his expected position posi-tion as the team's go-to-player. After a slow start to the season, Bilbro is beginning begin-ning to adjust to his new responsibilities responsibili-ties and the power forward has become a force. The teams traded the lead back and forth during the second period, with neither moving mov-ing ahead by more than three points. Pleasant Grove spread the scoring between six players in a quarter when no Viking made more than three points. Point the basket win at Spanish Fork game at two, teammate Chelsey Yarn put the Vikings ahead 4-2. A seesaw battle ensued. After May had tied the game at 8-8, Yarn broke the tie on a Monique Smith pass. Shots by Kristy Giles and May improved the Viking lead at 14-8. Grabbling Grab-bling a last-second offensive rebound, Stewart put a shot back through the hoop. Through Stewart rebounds and Anderson steals, the Dons tipped the momentum back to their favor in the early second quarter. Spanish Fork went on a 7-3 scoring run, which climaxed with Anderson tying the game at 17 through a layup made during dur-ing a steal. V "" , Vj zzze:.:, 4 guard Jayden Gray played his best game of the season, including his 3-point bucket ' in the quarter that kept the Vikings close. Spanish Fork managed to get the last shot of the half and with the made basket, bas-ket, the Dons had a two-point two-point advantage at the break. In the third quarter, the Dons appeared to be pulling away as they built a six-point six-point lead with only two minutes remaining in the period. However, the Vikings closed out the final two minutes min-utes on an 8-3 run that pulled Pleasant Grove to within three points entering enter-ing the final eight minutes of regulation. Bilbro's five points and Gray's four points paced Pleasant Grove's 16-point quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams fought for control con-trol of the game with three lead changes in the final three minutes. After a Spanish Fork turnover in the last 60 seconds, sec-onds, Pleasant Grove had a chance to win the game in regulation. The missed shot forced the game into a four-minute four-minute overtime as the clock expired with the score knotted at 60. In overtime, it was Wood who stepped up big for the Vikings, scoring five of his team's 10 points in the extra period. As the game Dorais shot lengthened it to 21-17 just before halftime. Stewart led a strong Don charge at the onset of the second half. Two Stewart three-point plays put Spanish Span-ish Fork ahead 25-23 and 28-27. Once the Dons secured their 28-27 lead, they stayed out in front for the rest of the quarter. Spanish Fork led by as far as 31-27. During the final minute of the period, May produced a three-point play that clipped the Dons' advantage to 31-30. Early the next quarter, May put the Vikings ahead 32-31 on an inbounds play. Pleasant Grove didn't secure a permanent hold on the lead yet, however. Stewart Stew-art gave the Dons a 33-32 lead. May hit two straight unanswered field goals to stir up a 7-0' scoring run that gave the Vikings a firm hold on the lead this time. However, when the score read 40-34 for Pleasant Grove, Stewart hit a freethrow that opened a Don comeback. The Vikings answered every Spanish Fork bucket with one of their own. , Things got really unnerving unnerv-ing in the final 20 seconds when Brittany Huff hit a trey that put the Dons within with-in 43-45. Yarn answered the three-pointer with a foul shot, then Spanish Fork gambled on another long shot, but it dropped a few inches short of the hoop. May led the Vikings with 22 points while Giles added another 8 and Yarn had 7. Pleasant Grove plays at Taylorsville on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m., then hosts Payson at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
