This is the tenth anniversary anniver-sary of "Warm the Soles," a yearly effort sponsored by Utah's Credit Unions. Amie Rose m . Utah Valley staff When Malea Peterson got word Sunday about the tidal waves hitting parts of Thailand, Thai-land, she turned on TV news to find out if the disaster was affecting her son, who's serving a mission there for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "We were worried enough to want to find out more about what was going on " Peterson Peter-son said. "One of the first things we heard was all the missionaries were accounted for and safe." Although she hasn't heard from her son since his Christmas phone call, she knows he's living in an inland part of the country. That means he wasn't near areas where massive waves destroyed buildings and killed hundreds in Thailand. The waves hit 10 countries, and the International Red Cross said Monday more than 22,000 people peo-ple have died in the disaster, The Associated Associat-ed Press reported. Deaths have been reported in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Somalia and in the Seychelles, ib The LDS Church accounted for its missionaries mis-sionaries in all 10 countries on Sunday, said Dale Bills, church spokesman. All the missionaries were safe. People posting messages on a locally run Web site for mothers of missionaries were talking about missionaries in Southern Asia being safe, said Betty Pearson, who runs www.ldsmissionarymoms.com. They were posting Web sites and phone numbers where missionaries' parents could get more information about the disaster. The Web site gas beeb pretty quiet because of the holidays, but Pearson said she expects it to pick up as soon as families start hearing from missionaries living in places hit by the tidal waves. And then parents will want to start talking talk-ing about what their children said. "They're all waiting to hear," she said. Cathy Robinson hasn't heard from her missionary son since last week, but she's not worried because he's living in Bangkok, away from the coastal areas hit by waves Sunday. She expects to get an e-mail from him Wednesday. Although the LDS Church has accounted for all its missionaries, it hasn't accounted for all church members in the area, according accord-ing to a church statement Monday. But so far, there haven't been any reports of injury or deaths among church members. After the tidal waves stopped and church missionaries were accounted for, LDS Church officials started working on relief efforts. Local church leaders are using church funds to buy medical supplies and other emergency gear for immediate help, according accord-ing to the statement. An LDS Church Welfare Wel-fare Services representatives from Salt Lake City and the area welfare manager also are on their way to the disaster area to assess what disaster victims need, in cooperation coop-eration with government officials and international relief agencies. The assessment assess-ment is the first step in making sure relief efforts effectively meet victims' needs. The International Red Cross is concerned con-cerned waterborne diseases, such as malaria malar-ia and cholera, could add to the death toll, the AP reported.
