Show Washington County Businessmen Report Mining Activity Is Already Helping Their Sales A small taste of what the opening open-ing of the Apex-Paymaster mines can do for St. George is being experienced ex-perienced by various businessmen here, who already report that money is beginning to circulate around. Some of this money will soon begin to be released through workmen who are to be employed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the survey that is to be made of the Cove mountain and Milner iron districts. A survey is underway for power lines to the Apex-Paymaster mines by the Southern Utah Power company employees, with the line to be completed and power ready in approximately six weeks, reports re-ports James J. Smith, mining engineer en-gineer who is in charge of operations. oper-ations. Work is being done on the lower low-er road through Bloomington to make it possible to bring in heavy machinery to be used at the mines. The distance by this road is approximately ap-proximately 23 miles, while the other road, which now turns off below the Summit Service station on Highway 91 is to be improved and the take-off on this road is to be from near the summit. Distance Dis-tance by this road is about 19 miles, the mine being about AV2 miles from Highway 91. The cooperation of the Washington Wash-ington county commissioners in the securing of road equipment to assist in the opening of this road has been asked and it is reported that the commissioners have reported re-ported favorably on this. Prompt action in the supplying of the road equipment is needed in that the company is already pushing this work. Rood To Mine Work is likewise going forward on the road into the iron mining district where a winter headquarters head-quarters camp is to be set up. This road is being opened up from Enterprise through Calf Springs canyon. When the road is open for truck travel, buildings will be erected at a sight selected by Al Neadam, U. S. Government mining engineer, who is in charge of the work. While this construction work and development is in Washington Wash-ington county, it is reported that both Iron and Washington county commissioners have been asked to assist in the opening of this road. It is estimated that from 30 to 40 men will be used in exploratory operations when the work gets underway. "My understanding of the matter," mat-ter," says Lawrence Wadsworth, president of the St. George Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce, "is that the allotment al-lotment of work will be made between be-tween the two counties, with Iron county on the inside track because of the fact that the Iron county commissioners were prompt in I their response for assistance with road equipment. The development of either the Apex-Paymaster I mines or the Cove mountain and Milner iron districts is -of vital importance to all of Washington county and should be given every possible assistance." |
